My late 90s rear wiper motor is riveted shut.
I just ground down the rivets and opened it up.
I'm not really sure what to do next.

What I would do, is see if you can pull out or drive out what is left of the rivets. Then tap the holes and use machine screws to hold the cover in place.

Drilled out the rivets and I got the wiper motor case open.

I am unable to drive out the shaft to examine and disassemble.
I tried a hammer and screwdriver as a punch.
I think I'm stuck.

I don't think the motor is serviceable. If it were it would have removable brushes. And would not be riveted together.
Good on ya for attempting.

i would think there would be a snap ring holding the shaft in. did you happen to remove one before you tried tapping out the shaft?

Bimmer has 3 threads going on this .6 hour job.

This is bordering on spam!

I didn't see one. Would the shaft be removed by pulling it towards the viewer, or away from the viewer of this photo?

i would assume towards the viewer. everything is usually assembled from the inside out.

someone just did a thread on this topic recently. maybe the answer is in there or you could pm him.

I'm also kind of interested in how this goes. It turns out the rear wiper motor that I removed from my '99 was a rebuilt unit, rivets are already gone and replaced with small capscrews by the rebuilder. (For all I know all they did was relube the gears, spray paint it, and put their label on!)

I don't know yet if the electric motor itself is at fault, the relay, or the gearbox is just binding up and needs to be relubed. Will have to play around with it when there's time, if I can get it to work it'll be a $0 spare. (Though right now the junkyard replacement part works perfectly.)

I tried smashing the other end of the shaft on the pavement, and it did not come out, towards the viewer.

I then tried to use a screwdriver as a punch to push the rod away from the viewer, and that failed to budge.

Looking at the photo I can't really see how to get the shaft out. I don't see a snap ring, E-clip, or the like. Will play around with my old wiper motor when I get the chance, though available time is limited and my current XJ project is checking local boneyards for an instrument panel with full gauges to swap in. (I really hate idiot lights, especially for coolant temperature.) No luck yet on that score...

LOL! Sorry, the techniques you use are just too funny. Not trying to be rude but anyhow, I'm guessing you followed hat thread from the other guy a couple days ago, I did too. Mine wiper motor did not have rivets but instead, screws. I was able to get the big plastic gear shaft out but not the wiper arm shaft. The plastic gear's metal shaft comes out towards the viewer. I used a vice and just compressed it with a punch on the shaft untill it popped out and I was able to pull it out by hand the rest of the way. When I put it back together, I just compressed it again and it pops back in. However, I as gonna check the magnets while I had it open and I Broke one of the clips holding the metal cylinder cover on. So I just screwed it and decided to get one from a junkyard as replacement. I did however plug the wiper back in and it seems to work fine except for the horrible rattle it makes from the lose cylinder cover thing. If I hold that still. It's fine. But of course, it spins fine without a wiper arm on, if I put arm on it will probably be slow and stop/go still.

Here is a pic of mine when I first opened it. The red circle is the pin that I got out.
