It's a $1595 car in a dealers lot. They are not going to take 5 or 6 hundred for it. Someone else has probably already bought it for 1500. But, if it is still for sale, go down there and negotiate until you get the best price possible. It's probably worth 1500 unless a few big issues are present. I have no problem trying to get a good deal, but you don't walk away on a cheap, clean looking 4x4 after making a low ball offer and expect the dealership to beg you to come back. They know someone else will snap it up for close to their asking price...... Within days.

Exactly right.

They may not know much about Cherokees, but they can look up the value in several books, and they aren't going to give it to you for $500. Get real, people. If he can get them to knock off $300, he's done well.

Do NOT walk away. Just ask them what their best price is, and keep saying, "I'm sorry, that's not good enough." Very polite, very pleasant, and very determined. Cash may be king, but people are people and if you are unpleasant they won't deal with you.

That's assuming you have inspected it thoroughly, of course.

Take some test strips with you to check for combustion gasses in the coolant, check the blow-by for sure, and take a mechanic's stethoscope with you and listen to everything with the engine running. Even crawl under it and listen to the transmission and transfer case.

"How will I know what to listen for?"

If anything is grinding, you'll hear it.

No, I think we did pretty good lol. If this was The Price is Right, I would have been heading on stage for that win!

This x241098705127. So much truth here, probably the best advice if you're going to go check this thing out. I wish I was closer, I'd scoop it up even if it is a basket case. It's calling me!

Start at 500. You can always up your offer. Once you have made an offer, they know you are serious. If they are asking 1500, they sure as heck don't have but 500 or less in it. You don't know what kind of damage this thing has been through or what the cost of fixing said damage might cost. You are taking the risk here. If you pay 1500 and then find out it need a total brake repair or even something more serious, you'll see it might not be a deal after all. Best to play it safe with car buying. There are lots of fish in the sea. Don't rush a car deal.

Make sure you feel good about it, then it doesn't matter what it costs.

I paid 3500 for a truck that was blue book listed at 3100 because it was super sweet and you can't even buy a piece of junk truck here in texas for less than 4 grand. It should be what it is worth to you. I'd be lost without my truck. I love it. I might have even paid the guy more if I had to. He was asking 5000.

Sure, it's great to get a great deal in the end, but if you have a good feeling, it drives nice, and your mechanic likes it, it is worth what it is worth to YOU.

Another helpful hint is that their quotas usually end at each months end. If you have a guy who needs that sale to make his quota, you'd be surprised how low they may go just to get it moved.

One more thing...never give up. It's you against them! And when you walk out, you have the power. I bought a brand new explorer once and it took me 8 months to swing the deal I wanted, playing 6 dealerships against each other. They finally gave in and even put in the moon roof I demanded. It was a lot of work, but I saved at least 15 grand for those 100 emails. Heated and cooled seats, it was sweet. Then Hurricane Ike took it from me. Oh well Life goes on. My advice is make sure you feel good about it and you'll be happy any way it turns out with the price.

And I agree with the guy above. You don't need to be rude at all. remember it is a game. Be pleasant and all and after saying it isn't good enough and when they say they can't do better, and it's more than you want to pay, then you leave. You'd be surprised how they find some way to sell it cheaper after you walk out on them. I have even walked across the street to another dealership before. Oh yeah, they watched.

That vehicle was:
$1795
$1695
now
$1595, that's a lot for a vehicle that needs probably....everything.
If one checks the "more ads by this user" the prices for other vehicles seem realistic.
