Not sure where you're getting that. Here's a link to the page Orlo screen capped on the prior page:

16 city / 20 highway
2001 Jeep Cherokee 4WD 6 cyl, 4.0 L, Automatic 4-spd

2001 Jeep Cherokee 4WD 6 cyl, 4.0 L, Manual 5-spd

He said in another thread he had a 4WD auto, so his EPA rating is 14 city and 18 highway. Looks like he's doing just fine.

By the way, these threads always attract a few people who claim to be getting 23 mpg. That's actually possible IF your air filter is horribly clogged. The computer will lean out the mixture to try to keep the air fuel ratio correct. So before anybody goes bragging about their unbelievably good gas mileage, understand that that isn't actually a good thing.

I read this thread, thought about it for a while, and said, what the heck, I'll donate.

'95 XJ SE 4x4, 4.0 HO, auto OD: I picked this Jeep up at the dealer with about six miles on it. It was my company vehicle for a few years. I did route surveillance and damage prevention on a fiber optic network and drove about 1000 miles a week. That was a mixture of highway driving, but almost no city stop and go driving. I generally drove it like I stole it.

A lot of it was two lane highway, county roads, but also some interstate driving. The vehicle did not have cruise control. I filled up this vehicle at every fueling and recorded the mileage every time (company policy). I could check the mileage per tank or across 20 tanks or the life of the vehicle while owned by the company. It got 20-21 mpg constantly over the time period it was my company vehicle.

When it was replaced with a '97 XJ, I bought the '95 with about 100k on it. I drove it about 5 years and sold it to my mom with 151k miles. She owned it from 2002 until her passing in July of this year and it had 160k miles on it.

I paid my three siblings 25% each of the KBB good condition value and it's mine again.

Except for tires, 1 new set of shocks, several batteries, 3 sets of brakes, belts, hoses, 3 water pumps, 2 radiators, 1 distributor, 2 sets of plugs, a few dist caps, oil, & filters, it's stock. Until recently, it still had 215x75x15 tires. It has 3.55 axles with the auto.

The first time I owned it, the mileage declined down to an average of 17-18 mpg. I have no idea what my mom got, but while she owned it, the average speed was probably 15 - 20 MPH & max speed of maybe 40 mph. She only drove a few miles a week, all in town. 9k miles in 14 years.

Now that I'm owner again, my mixed driving is yielding about 14-15 mpg for the few thousand miles I've driven it since August. Keep in mind, stock Seimens injectors that have never been out of the intake / fuel rail where they were born....

I'm planning an injector upgrade.

Over 65 mph drag matters more. 70-75... the bricks we drive suffer.

EPA does max speed of 60.
EPA minimum speed is 48.
Consumer reports does 65.

Wonder why most don't hit those 20 or greater mpg?

when mine was stock and in its prime it routinely got 21-23 mpg. i drive it to the mopar nats one year with a friend. the 2 of us (450lb in passengers haha) left here ac blasting running 75 down the interstate with luggage, coolers, etc. we drove out there, all weekend to heath, brice road, the hotel, to eat...everywhere - and then back home on one tank of gas. i averaged 23.9 mpg that trip. mostly intestate with a few in town miles. i then lifted the jeep 2.5", added a more restrictive exhaust and larger (235/75) tires. now it's getting spot on 21 doing roughly 80 miles of interstate and 25 miles of sub 50 mph to stop/go traffic everyday. i am anxious to see what adding a pacesetter full long tube and less restrictive exhaust does for it.

yes. i dd an xj over 100 miles a day. and i love every minute of it.

That is the only correct method. Actual miles driven as measured by the odometer divided by actual fuel pumped.

I see kids on here all the time talking about their gas mileage who are using some bogus miles per tank. They actually seem to think their gas gauges are an accurate measure of fuel used. Weird.

Or 3 or 4!

If you have an Android phone, look into aCar. Best app I have ever seen. It Just Works.

How are you calculating your mpg?

I went back and looked at my gas receipts. I'm actually averaging 14.7 city. Now crap "winter" gas will hit, and I'll see how far south it goes.

I'm dreading the same thing and in the same boat. I also have a completely stock 2001 XJ (145,000 miles, year old plugs, frequently use fuel system cleaner) and I've always felt my 13-15mpg was too low. I also have a fairly rough idle it seems to me.

I'm not sure what steps to take next.

That would explain my current drop from 14 mpg to 11mpg

I don't bother worrying about gas mileage. I know that my 98 burns through it quick. More than likely my speedo is off and it sometimes runs rich. My wife's 01 on the other hand, we took a trip the other day probably about 150 miles maybe a little less. Filled up before we left and returned home only burning about a 1/4 tank. No highway.

On the other hand I have a 94 Chevy G20 van with a 4.3. A couple years ago I was making an hour round trip Monday-Friday and got about 200 miles out of a 20 gallon tank. I've since done plugs cap and wires and a new cat and it's better.

I've actually been thinking of picking up an older gel tracker or something just to drive the mile to work and back.

It's got a 12 second run in it if I could get it to launch good.
Dies yours have 4x4 and auto trans? What is the MPG?
