GEAR RATIOS
Iv'e got an 88 wagoneer and am trying to find out if this model could have come with a tow package so i know what gears i have. It6s either a 3.55 or a 3.73

i've had 4 cherokees that came with the factory tow package.
2 were 87 with dana 44 and 3.54 gears and an 89 with d35 and 3.55 and a 90 with dana 35 and 3.55.

also it is easy to tell the Dana 44 from the 35. the 35 is oval and the 44 is more of a d shape. and there should be a tag on either diff with the info you need

^yup, 88 was before the chrysler takeover.
yes, you could look to see if the tag is still attached, but i doubt it. even if it is, you probably couldn't read it anyway.
best sure fire way to know is to remove the cover, clean everything up with some brake cleaner and look on the edge of the big ring gear. there will be a series of numbers. the last digits are the number of teeth on the ring gear and the pinion gear. ie 39 and 11. divide those and you get 3.54.

an easy way to tell if you don't want to jack it up and turn the wheel to cont the rotation
you can mark the tire at the bottom or were ever its easy for you
then mark the drive shaft on the passenger side
roll forward one tire rotation
if the mark ends up on the opposite side you have 3.55
if it ends up on the bottom you have 3.73

probably not but any thing is possible with jeep
an easy way to tell if you don't want to jack it up and turn the wheel to cont the rotation
