hopefully its not the pump because that can get spendy. i had a similar problem after my gas tank swap..turns out this guy came un-clipped
just popped it back in and been good since. it had been in with one clip the whole time so thats why it popped out but both snapped in the 2nd time.
bad news is you gotta drop the tank to check, but its not that bad of a job..just make sure you are close to E when you drop it.

its part of the fuel pump it reads how much gas you have. not sure how it works on the pre-97s since the way the pump goes in the tank is different, but there is a little cylinder on the end of a rod that floats and it moves the needle on the gauge reading how much gas you have.
AVjeeper, from what ive read, installing the fuel pump backwards can make your gauge read wrong.
thats just what ive read however.

It's my 97 jeep and I did take a 80 mile trip to crater lake. So lots of big hills and very windy. On my way back once I for close to home it looked to be working ok

How much fuel was in it, if it was in the lower range. It is semi-common for the needle to drop when on the accelerator or during turns and such because there are not many baffles in the tank.

My fuel pump gave out after 20yrs. I had a shop around the corner put in a new complete unit. I guess one of those clips could have popped out. It's a lot of work to drop the tank so, better reading a 1/4 low than actual.
Thanks for the pics and gouge.

From what I read of the instructions if you are not careful and smack around the plastic bit that the float is attached to it can mess up the reading. I just re-did mine so we shall see what the end result is when it comes to accuracy.
Also...I have no idea if this has anything to do with it or not but many fuel pumps are multi-application units, they can be used for different vehicles. I remember when I went to get mine the guy at NAPA asked me what size tank I had...not sure if they are calibrated differently or what but that could be another cause for a misreading?
