im posting this for my buddy this weekend we redid the rear main in his 4.0. we did everything correctly and tourqed the bolts to the proper specs. we found a right up on the web for our guild lines since this was the first time we have done one on a 4.0. in thw write up the dude said that after the install it will leak for a couple days until the seal swells and seals all the way, but today i get a call from my friend saying that there is a puttle sitting under the jeep the size of a 12in sub..... so anyonw got any input on the situation

are you sure you didn't put it in back words and gouge the seal or did u apply soap to the seal first?

Just got mine done and it did NOT leak or have to swell seal. Did you get a double lip RMS? I would also check to see if oil is coming out of the oil filter mount (the mount has rubber O rings that leak) and the distributor or from the back of the valve cover...Tj

no he didnt gauge the seal the second time lol he did it the first time and we had to go to autozone to get a new seal. we lubed the seal with motor oil before we installed it and put grey permantex on the end of the lowers bearing housing. its leakng out of thefly wheel cover. we changed out the o rings in the oil filter housing already

Try wiping the rear of the valve cover then start it up and put your hand back there to see if thats leaking. The valve cover is notorious for leaking in the rear and draining down the motor to the bell housing also you may have twisted the oil pan gasket putting it on (I know someone who got the oil pan gasket done and they twisted it putting it in) and its leaking from there...Tj

Should we have used a OEM RMS?? My one friend used to be a mechanic at a Jeep dealership and he said the parts store seals are garbage. I've never had a problem with Fel-Pro gaskets before though

It could be a possibility that its the oil pan gasket. I was having a hell of a time keeping the gasket in place.

TJ, its definitely not the valve cover gasket, its leaking real bad. Its been driven about a total of 30 minutes since done, and it was a little over 2 quarts low.

What i do for gaskets is after buying the one piece rubber one, i cleaned it all off and then put a small coat of RTV then put the seal on and flipped it over to have the pressure keep it in place, i then did the rear main, about a 30 min job which will give the RTV time to set up and keep the one piece seal in place. just a tip it works for me and i have had no issues.

You need a one piece oilpan gasket.. also from Fel-Pro in addition to their dual lip seal.

You cannot attach the oilpan gasket to the oilpan and put it up that way and expect to not have leaks.

You need to thoroughly clean the block, bearing cap, and timing cover to use adhesive to glue the gasket up. Use HiTack#97, and install all the bolts for a few hours if warm out.

In a pinch i also used "the right stuff".

We got the Felpro 1 piece gasket but we used gray RTV to hold it in place while we put the pan up. Do you glue the gasket up on the block??

The Jeeps going to a garage this time to get the RMS done. That way if it leaks, they get to fix it again.

Never buy a rear main gasket from auto zone. They suck. I always suggest at least getting it from the dealership. I can get mine for like 20 bucks through my brother in law

Yes, use HiTack97. Block has to be clean...very clean. Apply the adhesive to the gasket, place it against the block without sliding it around.. line it up right the first time. Install the oilpan bolts and take a few hours off.

Then take the bolts out quickly and toss the pan up and reinstall the bolts.

I was just up your way last weekend, i could have swung by and showed you had i known.

I do alot of RMS jobs here, this is the best way i'v found to do them.

I gotta do my RMS soon. Me and bigomudders did my oil pan gasket not long ago and my RMS is leaking. It's holding out and I put Lucas Oil treatment and it has actually slowed it down some but i need to repair it

took my 93 into the shop for the RMS, mechanic ended up doing the valve cover gasket because it was leaking, saying you have to start with the top of the motor and work your way down. Now oil is seeping out of the oil fill cap, need to replace that and see if oil still drips, leaks down by the oil plug and drips on the exhaust, makes a terrible smell.

I had a cloud of smoke behind me like you wouldn't believe. it looked like a crop duster going down the road. I was looking in the rearview and all I could see is blue smoke. I was waving people by to pass me cause I felt bad for them. You should've seen the stares I was getting...lol
