Default Fuel Filter Replacement/Rough Running

I have a 93 XJ with the 4.0 and I'm going to replace the fuel filter. When reading the Haynes manual, I have to relieve the fuel pressure before I do that, no problem. My question is will just starting it back up re-pressurize the system? The service dude I talked to on the phone at the dealer said I need to put the key in the "on" position but don't start it, and let the system re-pressurize. Does that sound right? Also, what could be causing rough idling and rough running. It feels like it doesn't have any power and it's running extremely rough. I did a minor tune up(spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, oil/filter, transmission, axles, transfer case and air filter) in February for TDS event and it was running smooth. Haven't done anything since and just started running badly. ????

The procedure they gave you to build up fuel pressure is correct, although it may take some cranking to get the air out of the line.

It could be running rough if your fuel filter is clogged.

Thanks to you both for your info. I did figure out the rough running issue, one of my spark plug wires was disconnected from the distributor cap. I forget it's the sway bar links that need to be disconnected, not the spark plug wires! Just a little Jeep humor. A very little Jeep humor. Anyway, still replacing the fuel filter as I don't know if/when the previous owner replaced it.

New fuel filter is still a good Idea. I replace mine every spring and never have experienced a stopped up one as a result of my maintainence schedule.

Ahh he used my thread.

After doing hte job I feel there is no real need to relieve the fuel pressure it just doesn't make enough of a difference to take the extra time and stuff.

How did you know I was(am) sick. I feel like I have been on my death bed the last few days. I had to come to work today but I am all hunkered down in front of the heater.
