Hey Guys!

So I'm changing the fuel filter this coming Friday! Yay! But I need a detailed description because, unfortunetely when we had it shipped, all personal items and books had to be taken out for liability purposes. There was a Hayne's Repair Manual inside it but when it got here it was gone. . . So, if anyone is replacing a fuel filter any time soon, take picture's for me!! 1996sportXJ told me that there is a cap to depressurize everything before I start to take everything off. So if someone could send me a picture of were that cap is, i'd appreciate it. I looked, but everything is just covered in grease and I can't find S***! But I'll wrap the fuel filter and fuel filter hoses with ceran wrap and just blast everything off with water. But yeah, I should have it running by Friday, if nothing else goes wrong!!

I dont have any pictures right now but its easy to find. Pop your hood open, look at the fuel rail and youll see a Shrader valve with a cap on it. Take the cap off, put a rag under it then push in the valve with a key, screw driver or anything you have available to release the fuel pressure. After you do that changing the filter is pretty straight forward. You just remove the clamp holding the filter, the two hose clamps and put it back together(at least thats the way it goes for my 90 XJ). Hope that helps

Thanks guys so much!! It really helped me! Should I wait to release the pressure until I have the fuel filter in hand, or just release it now? Which would be best? Probably the first one right? LOL! Thanks 1996sportXJ for the pictures!! Without them, I would have NEVER found it!!

Release the pressure first, then go under your XJ with all the tools needed and proceed to remove the filter. Be carefully when you remove the filter so you don't get any fuel on yourself(for some weird reason I once was sprayed with fuel when removing the filter).

Wow what an idiot I was! It was staring me in the damn face while I was topping off the Coolant. Oyyyyyy veyyyy, yep thats me for ya! Flighty as the day is friggin' long!! XD

1996sportXJ shows you the pressure test/bleed valve (Shrader, not Schroeder... Schroeder is the piano player in Peanuts cartoons). If the engine hasn't been running and with a hole in your fuel line I seriously doubt there's any pressure in the system but it's a good idea to bleed it anyway.

As far as the fuel filter goes, it's the most basic of mechanics...



Start by removing the filter mounting bracket bolt and remove the retaining arm. This will allow you to drop the filter down.



Next, use Vise-grip pliers or some sort of clamp to pinch the supply (NOT THE RETURN) fuel line that goes from the pump to the filter. This will minimize the fuel loss from the tank when you start pulling hoses. at this point, you can begin replacing all fuel lines, including the stubby little one between the filter and hard line leading to the front of your Jeep.



After you've replaced the filter and all rubber lines, the last step is to disconnect the old (pinched) line from the fuel pump and connect your new line. The quicker you make this exchange the better.

Keep in mind, the photos are of an '89, not a '95 so you may need to adjust the procedure if yours looks different.

Oh, and make sure you install your filter with the flow arrow pointed towards the front of your Jeep.

I would get new hose clamps. Mine just came with spring clamps.

In that last pic, easiest thing to do to get most of the fuel out. Is disconnect that connector to the left (in the pic, but pass side) of the fuel filter. And then crank the engine and let it run til it does. The pressure will be gone. Then R/R the filter.

Don't forget to clean/replace all the grounds when changing your battery.
