fuel filter for 98 cherokee

fuel filter for 98 cherokee
I have a 98 cherokee and the other day I ran it out of gas. It's running like crap and I put in injector cleaner--no help. I went to get a fuel filter and to my suprise, there's not one on that vehicle. One store told me i've gotta change the pump. the other said the fuel pressure regulator. can someone tell me anymore info? the fuel line leaves the tank and runs into a box (?) under the frame, maybe this is the regulator. I appreciate any help. thanks.

The black box is your evap canister,on a 99 the filter and regulator are located on top of the pump,I am pretty sure they are also on a 98.
