97' Jeep Chrokee Sport gas gauge issue..
Hi, I own a 97 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4x4 automatic 4.0L 6 cylinder and I have been trying to fix my gas gauge for quite some time now with no luck what so ever. First off i would like to state that I have replaced the sending unit (along with the fuel pump module assembly, because the harness had spliced wires) as I thought this was the problem since the old sending unit had the silver wear and tear line going across the potentiometer as well, but this didn't fix my issue. When I had everything hooked up with the new sending unit, the gas gauge did move when the key was turned to power, but it read incorrectly since my tank is full, it read about a quarter, and then dropped back down to E. I removed the instrumemt cluster to check contacts on the fuel gauge and they were like brand new, but I unscrewed them and wiped them anyways. Even the pins were like brand new. Plugging the instrument cluster back in I thought maybe it was loose or something so I put it back and turned the key and the gauge moved but dropped back down to E. I'm completely stumped and would love to have my gas gauge working again. I did the instrument cluster diagnostics test and the gas gauge moves perfectly fine when I do this, but it won't read the fuel level besides that. This happened one day while I was driving the fuel gauge just dropped to E and ever since has not worked. Ocasionally when I put the key to power electricity it moves and trys to read the fuel level, but always drops back to E no matter what.
