Cranks alot before starting.
The guy i bought this jeep from 90 cherokee 4.0 auto. He replaced the fuel pump couple months ago and i just replaced the fuel pump relay and filter. It still cranks forever before it finally starts? and it will sputter and high rev for a few seconds. Now if i wait a few days or a good 3 or 4 hours it will start with one crank, turn it off wait a second and it will crank alot before it starts agian. Does anyone know why and could help me lol im new to jeeps.
Also, is the fuel pump supposed to turn everytime you turn the key on? Mine doesnt or i just cant hear it everytime. I do prime it and still nothing.

Try this...
I had a long start PROBLEM, and after alot of reading and a little help from a good friend (hooked up a computer and looked at all the vitals) we figured out all I had was a fuel pressure reg problem.
BTW: I really think this is your problem because mine ALSO stumbled alot before it started, thats what got us thinking it was flooding out, I know, how does a FI vehicle flood???
Two things we could think of...1) bad injector leaking by or 2) fuel pressure regulator leaking by...the vacuum line goes DIRECTLY into the intake manifold...so it turns out it was leaking and causing flooding symptoms!!

I figured out my long start problem.... Turns out my Fuel Pressure Regulator was leaking by the diaphram into the intake and flooding out the engine, not to mention depressurizing the fuel system. figured it out by turning the key to on a couple times to pressurize the fuel system and taking the vaccum hose off the regulator and VOILA it was leaking fuel! new regulator installed and now im back to quick starts!!

Just bought a '99 Cherokee, it took some time to fire when cold, when warm it would fire up fast. It sat 3 days, went to start it and the battery was dead. Bought a new battery and it fires up fast now.
