My 97 has a very slight "tug" cycle at the steering wheel when turning very sharp. I think it might be normal from the front u-joints slightly binding?

u-joints have a limit before they bind up

although I usually only feel the binding when my NP242 is in full-time, don't usually feel it in 2WD

Mine is very much more noticeable when in 4WD, almost like the Diff is spooled. But I can still feel it very slightly when turning at full lock either direction in 2WD. Maybe a difference of Differential setups?

Welcome to the forum!

I have the NP231 TC and it sounds like you may not have completely disengaged from 4wdh if its that bad. My 99 has very little to none in it, first thing is to go under the Jeep and make sure the TC linkage is in 2wd and not 4wd it happens often from improper shifting to worn bushings and out of adj. after a lift.

Check that first to rule it out and then we can go from there the others may be correct also but this happens often it seems with new owners of the XJ's.

Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual. The suggestions in CAPS are mine.

"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I LET OFF THE GAS, THROW THE LEVER, TAP THE GAS AND LET OFF.

4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".

TO SHIFT OUT OF 4L, SHIFT THE TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL WITH THE VEHICLE STOPPED, SHIFT THE TRANSFER CASE LEVER TO 2H, THEN THE TRANS TO D IF YOU HAVE AN AUTOMATIC, OR INTO FIRST GEAR WITH A MANUAL, AND CONTINUE ON.

I know when i'm moving around in a parking lot, making tight turns etc.. My front tires act like they are locked, you can hear them slipping on the loose sand on the pavement. Mine has done this since i've owned it. Not saying its normal, just what mine does.

Any 4 WD can be in some bind between front and rear axles. (even with identical wear on identical tires). Under that tension it won't let the gears disengage. It's a common practice to back up 20 to 50 feet after shifting back to 2 WD, to take the tension off the gears. If your light works, GREAT! Maybe just letting up on the throttle will do it. Without I light I'd back up some, then see if it feels right.

I shifted in and out of 4wd a few times and issue seems to have gone away. Guessing something was stuck. Thanks for suggestions
