Default Engine shut off while driving

I have a 98 cherokee with the 4.0l and recently it has been shutting off randomly while driving, there isnt any chug or jerk it just shuts off as if you where to be driving down the road and you turned the key off...

Any ideas???

Sounds like your CPS. Does it start right back up?

Got gas in it?? I know its stupid question but, my gas meter is off by a 1/4 of a tank. so at times if I let the gas get close to 1/4 tank which will be damn near empty, I will make a 90 degree turn and my jeep will shut off , completely... like just died..guess from gas going to one side of tank, but would start soon as I was straightened back out, ..Once I learnd why, didnt happen with more then 1/2 tank of gas, thats the least she will ever have

Crankshaft position sensor is a primary suspect. They can be tested, but if they're intermittent, it might test fine and be faulty.

If you end up buying one, buy it directly from Jeep. Plenty of hit and miss (with a lot of miss) with an aftermarket crank sensor. It IS worth the extra money in reliability here as the crank sensor is the most important sensor on that engine.

How do you test them?

You can also check your engines grounds too. Doesn't sound the issue here but it would be a hell of a lot cheaper

Link to testing procedure. But again, testing is NOT always conclusive. Especially with an intermittent sensor.
