Door Mechanism Will Not Release to Open
2000 Cherokee, at wits end, I have been working over 8 hours just today. The power lock mechanism was whining (like me) so I took it apart & found the gear inside was striped. So I put it back together so I could go to the dealer to get a new one without the door swinging open as I drove. Got the new one home attempted to open the door & it is like it is frozen shut. The door will not open at all, I have the new one & looked at how it was to work & pulled on the rods & it will not open. Now I tried going at it from the other direction & tried to get into where the mechanism locks onto the body& you cant get anything in there to push the lever back to release it.

The repair: I had to remove door panel while door was closed to access lock mechanism, disconnect all linkages, and force actuator with more force then the either lever or button could provide. The problem was a piece of the plastic sheath around the latch itself had broken off and jammed the mechanism.
On a related note, while attempting to clean and lube internal door parts, external handle lugs broke off due to corrosion. I suggest ordering new handles before engaging any work on the external handles. The Jeep is a beast and will take a lot but the lugs are to small to endure torque with even slight corrosion.
