Default differential fluid change really necessary?

My Jeep has 44,000 miles. I had the differential fluid changed once at 20,000.
Jiffy Lube tells me it is necessary preventative maintenance. I've read on Yahoo autos that it should last 100,000 miles. Who do I trust?

If your doing a lot of water crossing yes then change it frequently, if not 60 to 75,000 is sufficient. Jiffy lube will give half truths so to increase there charge per customer ratio.

when i got mine, the rear diff was leaking a bit, and when i opened it, it was mostly muddy water. luckily the gears were fine and nothing was broken, i just cleaned off the gears and casing with brake cleaner real good. I ended up putting Amsoil Severe Gear diff fluid in and i havent had any problems since. If i remember right, the bottle said it was good for 400k, but id have to double check that number.

If you mostly street ride and have synthetic in it, I might think about it in another 100k. These things are so light there is very little to damage the gear oil.

Mine gets changed every year, covers OFF. Jiffy sucks the oil out. Along with the brake fluid and Trans and TC and coolant. I wheel my XJ, anywhere, and DD 40 mile day a for work. I don't want to get stuck somewhere, Just cause I don't want to spend $40 maintaining my Jeep.

I change mine every 6 months to a year. But that is because I have an unnerving tendency toward sinking my jeep in water around 3-4 feet deep. But once a year would be more then enough.

i have a 157,000 and nothing has ever happened to me...and my buddy has a toy with over 200,000 with front and rear factory lockers and his is fine...its not really necessary but i doesnt hurt to do either...if you have a locker or some kind of posi then personally i would change it out every 60,000 or so

Ive had mine for little over 4 years now and I have changed it every year and sometimes twice a year. The way I figure is that it can't hurt. Plus I have had to replace an axle so that required me to do it once in the middle of the year unplanned.

Haven't changed mine yet. The '93 got a new axle 3 years before I bought it, though, so it's probably only got 30k on it. The '94... who knows? Probably never been done, but before I put the front on my '93 it's gonna get new seals and a fluid change.
