so I was wanting to take my diff. covers off and paint them and I was wondering if anything will leak out of them? Also what is the fluid and amount that I will need to replace? One final question, my jeep is a manual and its kinda hard to put it into 1st gear and reverse. Is there any kind of fluid that can make it shift smoother? Could it be the clutch?

when you remove them all the gear oil in the diff will come out. Have a drain pan under there! They take about 1.5qts of GL-5 gear oil (cant remember what weight off the top of my head). If you have limited slip diffs then you will need to add an additive along with the gear oil. Use RTV sealant as a gasket when you put them back together or you can buy gaskets. I used RTV with no problems. I used permatex high temp red.http://www.permatex.com/products/Aut...one_Gasket.htm

DO NOT. I reapeat DO NOT put GL-5 gear oil in your transmission. G_P is saying GL-5 only for the diffs (if I'm reading it right). There is a lot of info on this forum about manual transmission (AX-15) fluids. We have brass synchronizers which get eaten by GL-5. I wasn't having much in the way of shifting issues, but the REDLINE MT90, I believe, was great. I can't remember where I ordered it from (you can search this site for that info too), but it was great. Just make sure you get a pump for pouring the new tranny fluid in.

I went through this when i was redoing my fluids last year. I ended up calling Valvoline directly and asking them about their GL5 gear oil for transmission. They said they use a "non activated sulfur" that does is not corrosive to soft metals.

Yeah I meant use the GL-5 in the diffs only.
