Default Defroster?

Quick question for you guys in my buddies 98 XJ his windows fog up almost instantly.. Even with the defroster on level 4, it still barely works enough to keep the windows from fogging up and if 3-4 people are in the Jeep it can't keep up..
Also the heat works just as it should, any ideas what would be causing this?

This may sound stupid, but is a serious question..
What would freon have to do with the defroster?

On my old 2000 XJ (and now my sisters 03 KJ) neither would hold a charge in the AC system, and I didn't have the money to fix it so I left it that way for over a year, but never had an issue with the defroster..

Heater core. When a heater core goes bad, it generally leaks coolant into the passenger's side area and also causes windows to fog up after you turn on the defroster.

Do you smell anything "sweet" in the car after you turn the defroster on?

Thanks!
I don't really recall smelling it, but I will ask him if he ever has and tell him to check his coolant level and the passenger floor up by the dash for wetness.

A low refrigerant charge will prevent the compressor from coming on. The A.C system is used to dehumidify the air when in defrost mode.

X2 on a possible heater core leak.

The passenger side footwell will only be wet if the condensate drain is plugged. If the drain is clear any coolant that is leaking will drain out.
