do your parking lights work? When I bought my Jeep I had no parking lights found a short in the licence plate light and trailer light harness and where the cd player was.

went through the bulbs in the circuit, and the license plate light was the culprit. wasn't out, but was bad enough to break the fuse. i guess i don't understand the fuse thing if my parking lights and license plate light still worked but my dash dimmer lights didn't. can anyone explain that to me?
thanks for your help btw

I had the same issue in my 89, I figured that it must have a short or broken wire in the line some place. I just ran a new wire to the dash lights and they all worked except for two that were burned out. I replace them and all still work. This is not a hard job you need to pull out the guage cluster.

If you have a hitch and dont use it you may have some old torn up trailer wiring shorting out somewhere underneath.
Not sure how it is where you live but around me the squirrels love to chew the plugs and wiring on hitches and trailers!

everything works now, it was the license plate light like i said.
i was just wondering how the fuse thing works (newbie question...). if the fuse was out, how were the parking lights and license plate light working but my dash dimmer lights not? just a straightforward general electrical question about how the fuse works. everything is fixed, just want to know the workings of the electrical system. thanks

I'm not trying to highjack this thread, but I couldn't find any thing close. I kept blowing my lights fuse. found out it was the new radiator I put in was pinching a wire...Now they work..however...when I turn on my high beams, my dash lights go out except for the hi bean indicator light. All of the other electricals work...Has anyone every ran into a situation like this and how did you fix it? I appreciate your time and consideration.

Hi all, i wonder if anybody can help me!? Im having the same problem as rorysdaddy above:
I have a 93 cherokee that all of a sudden blew the 5 amp instrument panel/radio/interior lights fuse. I replaced the fuse, turned up the headlight dimmer switch and pop - it blew again. I have had every bulb/component i can think of unplugged but it still blows the fuse when i turn up the dimmer switch. So i decided to replace the headlight switch - with no joy.
Any help would be fantastic

Check the tail light bulb first
I've been tracking this issue for a long time but it took a back burner to more important things on this project (88 XJ). I remembered that I pulled the license plate light because it blew and melted the connector & put the new one in but didn't connect them. As soon as I crimped the wires and put in a bulb all of my dash/shifter lights came on no problem. They're a little dim but that might just be because of the daylight.
