D-35 w/clips on a 90 XJ. Are the right and left axles the same? If not, what is the difference?

They are different on zj's but just length. Probably the same is true on xj's. They do have different part nunbers.

Left and right will not interchange but the ABS and non- ABS will ? I'm confused. I knew the L & R were different lengths but I thought the tone wheels were attached to ABS axles and that you needed the tone wheels for ABS. I don't have ABS so I am just learning about the differences.

Yes... Left and right will not interchange... And yes ABS has tone rings on the shafts.. But ABS and Non are the same length. The tone rings the pick-up for them is inside of the brake hardware, basically underneath the wheel cylinder. If I get a chance tomorrow I will take a picture of the set-up. I just happen to have an ABS D-35 sitting that I am tearing down....

Thanks for the help… I guess. Now I need to haul around 2 spare rear axles. Oh well, what’s another 20 pounds on this tank. My mileage sucks anyway.

Just a heads up, the stock 1990 XJ D35 doesn't use c-clip axles. The 87 through 90 D35's use press on axle bearings on the shaft itself. The 91 through 2001 use c-clips with the bearings pressed into the axle.

Not to hi-jack but can you use the ABS on a non-ABS axle? And what years are the 8.25s ABS and can you leave the ABS tone rings and just not hook them up if you are non-ABS?

8.25 never had ABS on the XJ, well at least not that I have ever seen. Every ABS equipped XJ I have seen has had the D35. ABS or not, the axle shafts will physically interchange.
