Default Cut wiring to overhead console, and speedometer stopped working

Well in 100 years I never would've guessed that these two were connected. I've got a 2000 XJ 4.0L V6 4x4, and have had a non-working overhead console for a while. In a bit of a rash move I got tired of the wires hanging down in the middle of the cab, and decided to cut them out where they run down the passenger door frame into the fuse panel (instead of taking apart the glove box and removing the harness by hand). As soon as I cut it the speedometer, odometer, gas, temperature and pressure gauges all stopped working. In a strange twist however, the gas light and check engine light still work (although neither is currently on).

I went to Pull-A-Part and grabbed the wiring harness and console off a 2001 XJ (I read in a separate post that those were the only two years with compatible wiring connections), but the speedometer et al still isn't working. Has anyone got a fix for this? The pins on the '01 wiring harness look exactly the same as mine, I don't see any differences.

Thanks

Was there power applied when you did the cutting? If so, you may have caused some damage.

Have you checked fuses?

When you cut the wires you in effect short circuited everything.

Probably need another cluster and possibly sending units, if you are lucky and that is all you damaged.

And I would like to add that it's an inline engine, not a v6

Highly recommended to get a FSM for your year. It is VERY handy in showing the relationships between circuits that are not obviously related. Most of the wiring diagrams in the FSM seem pretty logical, but there are few interconnections between things that really leave you scratching your head as to why they did it that way.

I know there is concern on sharing locations of illegitimate FSM copies. But I believe the following source is reputable.

Remove fuse #9 from the Junction Block fuse panel and see if it's blown.

F9 protects (feeds) the overhead console and the instrument cluster.

I hope he's lucky and that's all he did to it.

It wasn't running when I cut the wire. Checked the F9 fuse and it's still good, unplugging it cut out the check engine/fuel lights on the dash.

New console and wiring harness isn't working.. any other ideas?

Are the CCD bus + and - wires touching anywhere? White wire with black stripe and purple with a green stripe.

No, not that I can see. I've been unable to reattach the red and black wires that run power to the vanity mirror in the sun visors. If that's what's keeping the circuit open can you think of any way to close it?

*sigh*

Did do the cutting with the battery still connected?

Dude, the condescension isn't necessary. No, the battery wasn't connected. Yes, it was stupid to cut the console wire. But the thing hadn't worked for years and with no headliner there was no amount of tape or superglue that would keep the wires up on a hot day.

Solved - The F16 fuse was blown under the hood. Replacing that restored the speedometer et al. WITHOUT reattaching the overhead console and wiring harness.
