UPDATE............

well now that I have mucked things up badly...see attached photos.

I now have to buy a new turn signal lever with intermittent wiper switch and cruise control switch w/4 wire pigtail which has to run down the steering column internally....

see, I was fartin around trying to see how much pressure exactly i needed to remove the turn signal lever from the steering column (as DISKMAN had previously stated) and I pulled too hard.....

Basically I ripped all four wires controlling the cruise settings apart. (see photos)......

SOooooo now i need to get a new switch/lever found one at dealer for 55 bucks... not bad.....the pain in the butt is gonna be taking apart the steering column to replace.. as I do not have the compressor tool to keep the high tension spring from flying off......

am gonna ohm out the old switch to see if it was bad, but i can tell you that i see the damage from use on the remaining wiring and its probably better to get a new one anyway..... will keep everyone updated....

the saga continues....

Default Finally!! Cruise control fixed!!

CRUISE WORKS GREAT NOW!

Well, it came down to the turn signal lever!

i got a new one from dodge dealer $58.00.......

looked at where the wiring went under the dash/steering column.

saw the 4 wire connector end up under the dash on the right side of steering column, and decided to just pull the wire through the steering coulmn to remove it......now, in order to put the new one in, by most normal R&R means I would have to take the steering wheel off and run the new wire down inside the column, well i said the heck with that, so i just ran it under the column and up over behind the dash and connected it, I then used Black Duct tape and taped it to the steering column...see pictures.

sooooooo if anyone out there has a problem with the cruise, as DISKMAN said earlier its more than likely the switch/wiring at the lever.

it was in my case.....
thanks for everyones help!!!!!!

Where are or what options are out there for repair of this line (Speed control to vacuum reservoir)? My line is broken beyond repair.

Hey guys, you with the cruise control problems, did the cruise light come on in dash? Mine doesn't even do that- I bought the machine yesterday, so I have a few issues ahead of fixing the cruise control, but mine doesn't even turn the light on in the dash when I press the button. Not /terrible/ but still kind of irritating.

What year do you have? I was not aware of a cruise control light. Maybe on 97+ but my 95 does not have 1. And if it does have one it didn't work with my old or new gauge cluster.

It is a '99. I can see the little "cruise" in the instrument cluster, I'm just not sure why it doesn't work or illuminate. Hopefully it's nothing bad wrong.

Hey Cpnwrench,

I'm currently trying to retrofit cruise into my Cherokee... where is the connector underneath the dash that you plug the turn signal lever connector into? Having trouble locating it in mine!

Default Okay... Original post... Twenty-ELEVEN!! And STILL "No Joy??"

Hey folks! NICE thread, by the way. A LOT of great info here.

But I see no solutions. Only "I've tried this..." "I've tried that..." but no solutions. : (

I found ONE solution with the brake switch, where the wire had come undone. But this ALSO meant that I had no brake lights either. A rather "easy" diagnostic, once you know about it.

I even went so far as to pull an entire stalk out of the Bone Yard, and a buddy and I replaced the whole steering column. With a Hail-Mary thrown-in for good measure.

THAT actually worked. : )

Now, I had a belt squeal and was fearful that it might be my harmonic balancer going ****-up again. As the "noise" was very similar.

I parked her, saving-up for that belt AND not really wanting to put it on, only to find out that it was a "bigger" problem. LOL!! I literally did not do anything out of "fear" for over six months...

...so She sat. And sat. And Sat...

I gave-in, put on the belt and solved the nasty squeal problem.

Took her on a "shake-down" ride, and the A/C is even still working. : )

Everything check and back to normal... almost.

Now the Cruise Control is out... A-GAIN!!! This is the third time.

I would personally, like to know WHO has successfully repaired their Cruise control on a Jeep Cherokee... anything from 1988 - 1993.

JUST solutions. Simple solutions that actually worked for you. Or maybe even the NOT so simple solutions as well. Heh! Cover all bases. Eh??

What were your solutions? LOL! Short of the Steering Column "trick."

Oh heck!! Put those in too. Eh? : )

Thanks all for an AWESOME forum. And one that has been around for so long.

I would also like to extend a HUGE "THANK YOU!!!" to cpnwrench. The man is a machine and has followed-through on this Thread from day #1. Bra-VO!!!

Also, how did you actually wind up fixing the ripped out turn signal switch and installing the new one. From my experience, the whole wheel has to come off (hahahah! Try reinstalling with the horn rind upside-down. LOL!!) Safe to say the neighbors did NOT like that, at 6am Saturday morning. LOL!!

Anyway, I am curious about that "broken repair/install" on the signal switch/cruise control lever.

As for the "Cruise Control" light... I THINK it depends on the year. I don't think mine has one. (1989-1990) but my Son-In-Law's 1996 has one. It just says "cruise" under the Speedo/RPM cluster... come to think of it, my 1993 Grand had a "Cruise" light as well. I hope that helps. : )

I look forward to any and all answers below. Bump! : ) -EB

E-Bliss.........

solution is there for you to solve.
1. vacuum, if you have a leak, anywhere in cruise /servo system.... NO workee!
2. After learning the hard way pulling turn signal lever straight out, which ripped apart my repair attempt on the frayed wires, I bought a replacement assy from JEEP/DODGE dealer... (next post i will have P/N for turn lever/wire harness). WHEN I replaced the lever and wiring, I just pulled the wiring harness from the bottom of the steering column area(near where the headlight dimmer switch actuator selector is mounted) and because the wires were already broken/torn off from the lever assy, the harness just pulled right out. NOW, as i showed in thread... when i re-installed i did not bother to take apart the steering wheel to run this wire through, I just used black gorilla/DUct tape and taped to side/bottom of column. I think if you have service manual (PDF or book) along with the HAynes manual[believe it or not, the Haynes is not a back compilation] you should see the connector near or at the headlight dimmer switch actuator selector( toggled by the rod coming down from the lever assy in the column).

3. Brake / stop switch at/behind clutch/brake pedal. this one is tricky.
Why? P.I.A. to manuever under and around in trying to mount or unmount the switch assy. some might say it is easy, i say not. That being said....i found just like on my corvette the contacts inside the switch had worn so that they were in an "open" condition no matter what position the switch was in (used multi-meter ohm setting to verify) once i cleane and adjusted tangs inside switch it had good continuity when the switch button was pressed "IN", [simulating a brake/clutch pedal press]. or if you prefer, just buy a new one.

4. here is the trickiest one of all........ TPS. (i will give you all 5 minutes to stop scratching your head, thinking "W.T.Heeeeeey" is he talkin about?)
if your TPS (Throttle Position Switch), is going bad like mine did , two symptoms arise..... first, cruise control will engage, but will begin to accelerate the Jeep. , opening the throttle to wide open..... second the cruise will engage, but only for like a second and instantly drop off.

lastly, if the servo /vacuum unit has a bad diaphragm inside (not holding vacuum). you have to replace. not even sure you can get them new anymore.

thoroughly checking the entire hose system for the vacuum portion is essential, also take off the vacc canister below passenger headlight area and plug up the hose connection real good and then fill sink up with water.. hold tank underwater, bubbles=cracked tank. no bubbles=OK

there are only a couple things will wont make this work and you have to check-list them to find problem

1. lever
2. wiring harness, plug
3. Servo vacuum control
4. vacuum canister
5. hoses (associated with Cruise control)...use vacuum gauge to test sections
of accessable parts of hoses for manifold vacuum. if well below 18psi at
idle that is a problem!
6. TPS, see above, think they are pretty cheap.
7. fuse or relay, the schematic from Serv manual or Haynes can help here.
8. brake/clutch switch.

So thats all there is, there is no interface to the Jeep computer, this is strictly an analog control sub-system.

I can guarantee problem is one of those items.

Hope this helps!

cpnwrench !!!!!!

ooops!

along with the HAynes manual[believe it or not, the Haynes is not a back compilation]

should read:

Default NICE post!

Thanks again cpnwrench for that concise list of things to check.

Those really are ALL that can go wrong with the CC (Cruise Control) : )

It's been ALMOST an entire year now and still "no joy" with my CC.

I HAS to be in the wiring/switch somewhere. I am thinking about grabbing the come-along and attaching one end to the lever and the other to a telephone pole. Hah! Now THAT should yank her out, REAL good!!

Nah... I'm just going to have to take apart the steering wheel assembly and go from there. : P Something that can (and has obviously, thus far) wait.

But this is a nice, pretty darned COMPLETE, list of things that need to be checked when the CC goes out.

Thanks again cpnwrench, for your attention on this one. : ) I have a funny feeling that I will see you on my most recent "event" ...broken Transfer Case??? Going to see what I can find out. : |

Again, much thanks and I am SURE that this will come in handy for others that need CC help.

BTW. I personally think that it would be cool if people put a simple one or two (or more?) liner, commenting on if the above solutions actually HELPED someone : ) -Just my thoughts, that's all. : )

Peace to all!! : ) -EB
