Crap rebuilt parts in auto parts stores near you
#17
No, I don't lick fish.
I know they do but if a part goes bad and you need to wait to ship out the part and then wait some more to get the new part in, ****, that will tie your vehicle up for at least a week and if it's your only vehicle you are screwed. Most of the time you can find better parts for cheaper online but you have to buy them knowing you might possibly be out of a vehicle for a week.
If it was my only vehicle though, no - I wouldn't wait for parts to be shipped. That being said, for my '92, I've STILL had to wait for parts even when going to the local stores. So I made up my mind that if I'm going to wait for a part, it's going to be a good one, and on my terms.

I don't have much trouble with pumps, but the saginaw steering boxes are getting worse and worse as no new parts are available to the rebuilders. They keep recycling parts from worn units.
The life cycle goes like this:
Box wears out, gets shipped in as a core return.
Box is disassembled to it's individual parts, parts are cleaned and checked for tolerance, then placed in bins.
Boxes are re-assembled by picking parts from the bins.
Sometimes the tolerances are complimentary and you get a nice, tight box.
Other times they're additive and you get a sloppy disaster.
The tight boxes remain installed, the sloppy boxes get returned and the rebuild process starts all over.
This of course takes the least-worn parts out of inventory while returning those that are nearing their tolerance limits back to the parts bins. Every year those tolerances get worse and the chances of getting a good rebuild diminish.
It isn't uncommon lately to get boxes with the preload adjustment screwed all the way down in an attempt to get the box to tighten up and it's only going to get worse. (check that when you buy one- should be three or more threads exposed)

And while I'm typing this, plus your thought on lines, you might be one to something. I'll R&R the lines at the slightest sign of soft spots or maybe just replace because of age.. It's 24 years and 170K old.
Thanks for the tip!

Years ago i tried the autozone cheapo stuff with the lifetime warranty,Well found out you spend a lifetime replacing the part over and over.I gave up bought better parts and never had to replace something that failed over and over. Now i have gone so **** i look for rebuild kits online and rather rebuild a alt or starter vs replacing it.Its cheaper and i know it was built right if not i can only blame me.

End of story (or kinda)
Picked up a box and pump from NAPA. First start and test drive all is well.
They say that the Cardone rebuilder supplies them as well as AZ.
I say give me my money back AZ, you struck out with 3 bad boxes in a row.
Having the discussion with the AZ store manager tomorrow.

Old fart with a wrench
I should have mentioned this earlier, but the latest thing is to swap in a Dodge Durango box. They are physically larger and add one more turn to the lock-to-lock so reduce the effort.

The NAPA parts are good and the AZ manager refunded my money.
Turns out the NAPA rebuilder is BBB not Cardone as originally quoted.
Happy camper once again....
