Can anyone tell me where this is located? the temp is fluctuating wildly, goes from slightly left of top dead center to about 120 and back and forth. i do not believe it's the thermostat because heat output is perfect. Is this thing easy to change? thanks guys

The HO XJs (91-95) have a coolant sensor on the T-stat housing and one on the rear driver's side corner, top of the head. The one for the gauge I believe is the one on the head. The one on the T-stat housing I beleieve is for the aux. fan.

What about how to fix this on a 1997 Cherokee Country 4.0? Can anyone help out with this? My temp sensor problem is wildly intermittent, this morning it didn't raise above 110 or so, the heat was fine though coming out of the vents. Every other time it would swing from about 110 to 210 and back. It's actually more of an annoyance than anything else, as I like when everything works as it's supposed to...

ok, so the one on my 87 is one the intake somewhere? i looked and found tons of sensors but not one that looks like the one in the box

i found it. mine is on the back driver's side of hte head. i thought it was a ground point but it is actually the sending unit. one wire pushes down over a stud and is brass when you wipe the grime off of it

Okay I'm gonna break this down:
4.0L
Renix= in the driver side of radiator
91+ = in the thermostat housing
Coolant temp switch/sensor for the guage = is in the head

2.5L
TBI/Renix= in the intake manifold since they have a heated manifold for fuel atomozation
91+ = in the thermostat housing
Coolant temp switch/sensor for the guage = is in the head

The one in the head is for the guage only, the other are there for engine managment system for fuel control.

2000 dont have one. It was incorperated into the thermostat houseing .Not a seperate unit anymore.On ones that have one is on top of the head on ds in the back.

Seems like Cherokee's are the favored automotive selection of navy chiefs. We have a chief in our command and he drives a cherokee. His is stock though.

Hey fellas just wondering if you guys had any luck with fixing the issue with the jumping guage, mine jumps from 110 to 260 and it stays pinned on 260 when its not jumping. ive tried changing the temp sens, and the guege cluster, all with no luck..... 98 by the way...

Mine is mounted to the Thermostat Housing (it's the one on the head with the heater core and radiator hose attached to it) and it jumped around like a **** one day.

Turns out the plastic pin that holds the connector on it had broken off. I reseated all the way (even though the pin won't hold it in place) and it hasn't bounced around since. I have a 98, and 97 - 2001 XJ's are a different beast from the 96 and before era.

However... my understanding is THAT one is just for your guage. I honestly don't understand why there would be more than 1 CTS in the first place. So I can see one that's wrong while the real one is burning in hell? Maybe someone can explain that for us.

The temp. control sensor, which is multi-wire, sends an electrical signal back to the main control computer which runs the whole operation of the engine, i.e., richness-leaness of the fuel supply, thus gas mileage, etc. etc.

The temp. gauge sensor performs one function. It tells the operator (the driver) via the dash mounted gauge what the engine operating temperature is at any given time. The gauge is preferred over the "idiot light" which, if used instead of a gauge, only comes on as a red light on the dash panel when the engine is about to exceed it's designed operating temperature ( an over heated condition) .

Im really glad that I found this thread, just picked up at 92 with some overheating issues. (blown head gasket) and they had an aftermarket coolant temp gauge hooked into the 2 wire sensor. Morons
