Convert Cherokee 2WD to 4wd
If you read I have a 01 with a transmission leak. I have access to a complete front end, transmission-tranfer and drivershafts from a 99. Question is if this all I would have to swap or is does the computer/wiring changes fall into this? Thanks!

Not sure on this late of a model but i know the elcetrical connections are present on older ones. They used the same wiring harness for all the Cherokee's in the day. Computer IDK sorry.

Yeah if it was a 96-00 model I'd say straight swap but being an 01 not sure if the 99 stuff would work or not but I would assume it should if it's the same trany model number...I think the input shaft spline count is what matters the most..The plugs should in theory work...You might snag all the plugs/wiring from that 99 just in case..

Check the gearing too as you might need to have the rearend too if the gearing doesn't match. Get the console and all the selectors too. Wiring harness is the same on both years as the parts numbers match. So you should be good to go there.

This is an auto trans?
I converted my 94 to 4WD back in 00, wasnt much as far as guidance back then.. had to figure it as i went.
There will be no issues with input shaft into the 4.0L, all the same. Since you getting the trans/transfer from the same rig theres no issue with input gear their either.
There was an odd year where the plug coming from the AW-4 trans didnt match up to the harness for the TCU. I "think" it was 98? I would suggest a search at NAXJA as this topic has been covered numerous times. Hopefully you could find some relative info for your 99 to 01 specifics.
BTW, the TCU is the only computer you'll need to be concerned with as it's stand alone.

definitely score the whole rig then you got everything ya need and like Blue said check the gearing as you may need the rear end as well...once you are done stripping all you need part out the good pieces and then run it across the scales and get your money back..

Yeah Overland I converted a 96 back around 2002 and it was not hard with a complete donor. I had a 94 donor but the interior was gone so I had to scrounge up the shifter and linkage plus the console center section for the 4WD shifter lever. Put a BB on at the same time and it sure went on quick. The rear was a D35 but the gearing matched.

Cherokees have to be one of the easiest to convert, along with other Solid axle 2wd trucks but that mostly includes older Fords and new heavy trucks (2ton+ and 1ton Fords I believe). But as far as light duty trucks/suvs go the Cherokee easiest.

Thanks for the replies. I have all the parts for the exchange from four different Cherokees as I part mainly cars and a few Cherokees for a living. It is a extra clean Cherokee my wife is driving but the rear seal is leaking if you happen to have read my other post. I am removing the rear tailshaft housing tomorrow and see if I can figure out if its the bearing. Too much more leaking and I will make the swap. Transmission service centers in my area are not the greatest and its hard to know if you are told the truth. I have way better luck swapping transmissions from the wrecking yards than gettting them rebuilt. So will keep you updated if I make the swap!

The renix era speedo is mechanical while the 94 was electrical. Simply swapping the speedo housing/gear from the renix trans to the 94's transfer had it done. I did have to lengthen the harness though.
I also had to swap the trans kickdown cable to the 94's as it was longer.
No issues with using the 94's 2wd TCU either.
