Default 96 XJ want to start in Drive

My 06 XJ 4.0 now seems to always want to start out in 4th or Drive and not low gear. I did top off the atf and it worked fine for a few wks but now in order to get it going I have to drop in into low. Remedies??

It's starting out in Drive rather than Low. It doesn't want to shift back down when I come to a stop. Usually the transmission will shift down when you come to a stop and when you start back up it will be in a lower gear and transgress through to Drive.

06 XJ?????????

First, learn yourself a bit on transmissions. "Drive" is NOT a gear just because that's where you put the shifter. Let's try to clarify this, shall we?

What I believe OP is trying to say is that from a stop, the trans is starting off in a higher gear, lets say 3rd since the information provided has been extremely vague. So essentially when he comes to a stop, the trans isn't downshifting. He needs to manually shift the trans to 1st when stopped to start off in "low". Normally the trans should start from 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 (overdrive). But is the trans not shifting properly or is it simply low on fluid again??

SO, do you have a check engine light on? Any codes? Have you checked the fluid in the trans? Have you ever serviced the transmission like changed the transmission filter and put new fluid in? What fluid are you using?

96!! That's exactly what it's doing. When i pull to a stop and try and start again it is starting out in the highest gear. No engine light on. Never serviced the transmission and it is showing full. Transmission fluid does not have a burnt smell and it is nice and clear. NAPA ATF.

Well...try draining the fluid and servicing it. Your using the wrong fluid. You need dex/merc lll

Do a trans service. Get a new filter in there. Report back.

When you service the trans use ONLY " dex/merc lll " and check the sensors while the pan is removed. The wrong ATF will give you problems in the AW4.
