Renix was a cooperative effort between Renault (which was partially owned by AMC) and Bendix to provide the early fuel injection and the control modules for that setup.

Right idea... wrong ownership....

Renault was the part owner of AMC.
Hence the reason that AM General was spun off into a stand alone company. The US government would not allow any company owned by a foreign corporation let alone one owned by the French government to bid on or participate in federal contracts at the time. AM General at the time, was producing heavy trucks and the HMMWV was being readied for its trials. AMC was forced to spin off their most profitable division to get the cash that Renault was offering.

Deloreans were made by DMC not AMC, but AMCs are still the coolest!

So did GM and others in the Big Three. I know that GM had it in the early 50's with their Chevrolet division and then used it in the corvettes. Yes Deloreans are cool until you try to get out of one that the doors lock themselves and then everything starts to fail around you... that really was not a fun repair...... stupid wiring....

RENIX was specified by AMC, designed by Renault, and built by Bendix/King. AMC produced the entire Jeep line through about AUG1988, when they were bought out by Lee Iacocca.

Late 1988 was the beginning of ChryCo production, but the RENIX system was still in use until the end of the 1990 model year. However, the engines and such were already being cast by Chrysler (I have a 1988 with an AMC logo on the side, and two 1990 engines with Pentastar logos cast into them.)

The XJ was refit to accept the ChryCo OBD-I control electronics for 1991, and the cylinder head was also revised. The block was also revised for reasons of Noise, Vibration, Harshness (NVH) and ended up being about forty pounds lighter.

The next revision was 1996, with the introduction of OBD-II control electronics. The main bearing cap brace was also added that year, and the block was lightened further. The block remained essentially the same through 2006, when production ended.

The head was also revised - exhaust ports were reduced slightly, intake ports were opened up slightly, but the ports were not moved.

The head and electronics were revised again in 1999, when the COP/DIS system was added. The XJ got that head in 2000. This is the infamous #0331 head, early pieces (up to late 2001) were prone to cracking. The better 0331 head can be identified by a "TUPY" cast into the upper surface (I believe TUPY is a Brazilian foundry.) The exhaust ports were reduced significantly (to retain heat and improve catalyst "light-off" time,) and the introduction of "manifold pre-cats" happened with this head as well. This was the format used until End Of Production (EOP) at the end of the 2006 model year.

That should help you win a few arguments.

Chevrolet had mechanical fuel injection on early versions of the corvette in the 50's or 60's i'll have to dig out my books to get the exact date, but fuel injection was not even a new idea then, it's just been made easier with electronics.

The idea of fuel injection, I believe, was devised by Rudolf Diesel when he designed his Diesel cycle engine (which was designed to run on either coal gas or peanut oil - tune for whichever.)

This is why "greasel" and WVO can work in Diesels - that's essentially what they were originally designed for!
