I have a 93 bought 4 yrs ago w 165K now has 211K. I have literally put less than $100 into it for repairs. and that total includes a starter.
My '95 has 193k, ive had it for a year, put 10k on it and very little trouble with it. Biggest issue is the water pump that started making bad noises last week....

You've created a monster O.P.!
Anyways my 98 has 169,000 on the clock and I do not have range anxiety what so ever. On a side note: My buddy had a 94 (I think) anyways he got 450,000 out of his. What ended up leading him to scrap it was, when he took the head off he noticed there were holes burned into two of the pistons that he could fit his pinky in.
So he put her back together and DROVE it to the junk yard. She wasn't pretty by no means but she always got him home.

I'd say the value of the XJ depends on the condition of the body/undercarriage. You can change motors, drive train components, suspension components, ad nausium; but if the unibody is rotten its life is very limited. Don't waste money on an old rusty dog. It's only wishful thinking that it will outlast you. Conceivably, after thousands of $, you can have a zero time overhauled engine, tranny, TC, differentials, etc. sitting on top of a pile of rust.
