I'm also new to the forum and found this post before I got my Jeep. The PO told me that it was a blown head gasket but I'm skeptical because the #6 cly. is full of a water/oil mix but it did start. I've almost got the head removed (had to find a 13 mm deep well socket that would fit over the studs) but I don't think i'm going to get away with just replacing the head gasket/head. Most of my info. came from this forum so I decided to join so that I could contribute. I've never done any major engine work before but always work on my own ride and have found that the Jeep is cake to work on. Just a lil FYI that they don't tell you in the hanes maual you have to have a fuel line disconnect tool to remove the 'quick connect' fuel line connector. I spent a whole day scratching my head over this.

I just started doing the head gasket on my 2000 xj. No problems yet except I am not looking forward to pulling the cylinder head due to the shear weight of the thing, and lack of proper tools. (This will give me an excuse to puchase more without wifey getting suspicious).

You're going to need a 3/8 13mm deep well for the head bolts. As for the weight, you can use the rocker bolts through a piece of chain for a handle. Definitely have someone to help you lift it off.

my fiance has 2000 wj with i6 and has oil leaking between head and block not very bad but still a little bit: coolant is fine in resevoir and jeep does not overheat: does seem a little slow: i have not checked compression nor have i ever, but was wondering if the oil leak there was caused from gasket...jeep did overheat a couple months ago from efan failure, but this leak was unnoticed until recently when oil was getting on the o2 causing a cel: head or gasket failure, warped?

It sounds like I've got the same problem with my 2001. Checked compression on #2 and 3 and they're both low. I figure I'll get into the head gasket this weekend, but figure it'll be a good idea to check over the valves as well. What's the best way to verify the valves are working properly?

I re-used my old bolts. Not saying it was right or wrong but I did and haven't had any problems. Just tighten them down in the order and torque specified.

Ok, so I've had my **** box ( 94 XJ <3 ) for two years now, a month after I got her I realized my temp gauge wasn't working when it ultimately overheated so bad that it was knocking and smoking. Fast forward to today after it was "rebuilt" and I realized that he never changed my bolts on my head ( two are missing or broken). A couple months ago I was overheating for seemingly no reason; let it cool and I had bubbles in my radiator. OK, head gasket leak. Is this something even worth fixing? I have a full garage and decent tool availability now. If so, do you have any links on where to start or how to check compression? Thank you!
