Default check engine light?!?

98 4.0 that the check engine light came on. How do you figure out what's wrong?

Default

Scan it with a scanner or run the on-board Diagnostics code retrieval, find which error code activated the check engine light, and troubleshoot from there.A good start is having a repair manual, like Haynes, handy. If you don't have one let me know and I can e-mail you the PDF version of the repair shop manual.
Get the tools ready, be ready to get dirty and welcome to the club.
