Check Engine Light
Ok, I feel like an idiot but where is the check engine light located on an 89 cherokee? A pic would help...
I have a emissions light on but no check engine light (might be burnt out)

It's not that we don't want to but we don't have problems with our Jeeps, we do not know where they are located either.
It is either to the left or the right of the gauge cluster. I want to say the left.

I walked all the way out to the parking lot at work to get this for you. It had me wondering as well. When you turn the key to the acc (1 click) the light should come on. On the left between the cluster and the vent there is an area with about 6 horizontal bars. There are actually 2 vertical columns of "lights" there. The Check Engine light is on the left column, 2nd from the bottom. The 1 on the bottom left is the upshift light. This is on my 93 4x4 5speed. How is that for service?

So that must mean my "check engine" light and "emissions maintenance" light are one in the same.

i was wondering the SAME thing!!!
I know it is a 231 too.
I wouldn't put it past the previous owner to just put one that fits so that there was something there.... maybe i will have to check the jy for a replacement for an 89....

Because they make a standard lamp bezel, and simply do not install bulbs for lamps not needed. Simplifies logistics that way.
"EMISS MAINT" is a light that is activated by a mechanical timer, and the timer is most often removed by a PO when the light kicks. You shouldn't see that one come up.
1987-1990 XJ/MJ with the AMC gasoline engine does not make use of the CEL/MIL, as the RENIX control system is "pre-OBD." The 1984-1986 with the GM V6 probably did have the CEL/MIL used (I believe the GM control setup was OBD-I compliant,) and 1991-up got the ChryCo OBD-I electronics.

The EMISS MAINT timer isn't connected to anything electronic, and doesn't indicate a fault. It just lights up at intervals to let you know that some components (particularly the HEGO) have met their "specified service life" and should be replaced. SSL for a HEGO is 60-80Kmiles, although I've seen them run 150Kmiles without any trouble.
You can usually spot a HEGO failure on RENIX by the fact that your fuel economy drops slightly, and there's no other identifiable cause (there's no real way to actually test a RENIX HEGO - it's a non-standard type. The test given in the FSM merely checks the heating element, and not the sensor proper.)
HEGO - Heated Exhaut Gas Oxygen (sensor)
SSL - Specified Service Life

I want to apologize for providing false information. I did not realize the difference between the Renix and the Chrysler engine management system made a difference on the warning lights as well.
