No need for new thread here I don't think...just wanted to chime in.
2000 XJ 4.0L with jet black transmission fluid. Drained the pan and added new to meet the dipstick indications. Going to put 1000 or so miles on that fluid then drop the pan, replace filter, add new fluid. Haven't got to the transfer case yet but will. Using Castrol Dex/Merc fluid.

Little tip on the transfer case. Remove the fill plug first.
Just in case. LOL.

That's essentially what I did...poured some ATF-4 through the funnel (2 qts) after it drained fully and before replacing the plug and filling...obviously...til I saw red flowing out of the bottom and then filled with Castrol Transmax Dex/Merc. A mechanic at the Kost shop told me to go with Valvoline max life ATF but at this point I'm going with minimal intervention on this trans. Will be repeating this process after another 1k mi. ...granted my cylinder head replacement goes well.

That is the correct fluid for an AW4 transmission, no matter what any auto parts store clerk tells you. Any brand (yes, even WalMart's brand) of Dex/MMerc.
ATF+4 is NOT correct for the AW4 transmission, no matter what any auto parts store clerk tells you.
Now you need to do a complete flush to get that stuff out of there. See my sig, #3.

Still no issues with rinsing my 2000 XJ 4.0 Auto after rinsing it with ATF 4 and then filling it with Castrol Dex / Merc. put 120 miles on it yesterday but after rebuilding the rear I'm too far gone to drop the pan tonight. Maybe I'll get to it tomorrow after I rebuild the front. Maybe not. Will keep you updated.

So funny! clap clap for you...who woulda thought putting ATF in and Automatic Transmission was so ridiculous. Just because I'm new to Cherokee forums doesn't mean I'm new to 4.0's ... have your fun.
