Automatic transmission fluid and you'll need a 10mm allen wrench to get the drain plug out.

I can't say the service interval.
It uses Automatic Tranny Fluid.
Holds either 2 1/2 or 1 1/2 quarts, I think it was 1 1/2 qts.
Theres a service manual on Pirate4x4.

yours is different than mine then.
NP231 it has two huge plugs on it. I used a 1 1/8 I think it was to get it out to drain it.

my np231 used a little under a quart before it started to spill out the fill hole, i had fun trying to get the fluid in there too haha, i had to use a spout from a funnel and put it against the driveshaft and stuck the one end in the t-case, also i found out that its a good idea to loosen the fill plug before you do the drain plug cause it drains better, if not it just comes out like crazy and gets everywhere

I use a spout from a Gear Lube bottle screwed on to the ATF bottle.

It's also a good idea to loosen the fill plug first, just in case you cant get it loose. Suppose you drained the fluid out and then couldn't loosen the fill plug.

Years ago I swiped one from SWMBO's kitchen and drew a skull & crossbones on it and left it in my shop. That way, it'll never find it's way back into the food chain.

Default Transfer case oil

On my 96 I had to buy a 1 3/16th socket to get the fill and drain plugs off. It is surprising that there are so may options for the drain plug on the NP231. I used ATF-4 synthetic as new oil.
