changing trans and transfer case fluid
How often do you guys change your trans and transfer case fluid. Also what fluids have you all been using. I was going to use vavoline syntech 75-90 for trans and dex 3 for transfer case. Let me know guys if I should change my way of thinking if you have had experience with better fluids.

Your profile says you have an auto tranny....
Your auto trans gets Dex 3...
Your T-case does also...
But the intervals as to changes is going to depend on your usage... The worse the enviroment, the more frequent changes...

Whowey got it spot on... That ATF4 is a no-no in the AW4's...Regardless what the Chrys. TSB's say... If you're having a hard time finding Dex-III still, try using performance trans fluid, almost all of that still is Dex-III.

guys i just and bought some and only thing they had was Dex IV but says on the bottle it outperforms Dex III. how do dex levels work anyways? by the weight of the oil, higher the number thicker the consistancy? and has anyone ever used the IV before?

The differing Dex numbers refer to the position in the series where they were created...
Dex I is before Dex II, etc...
Dex III can replace any Dex II, or I.. but not the other way.
In 99.9% of the applications a Dex IV will replace Dex III just fine.
STAY AWAY from DEX VI... its completely different and intended for specific applications.

-- Why can't you use Dex IV? - says who? Is there a study, or someone tested it???
Isn't it supposed to be even better than III?
Also -- is the cheap store brand just as good (Dex III)

You know this thread is from almost 4 years ago, right?
ATF+4 and Dexron 4 are of a different viscosity and have different friction modifiers than the fluid specified by the manufacturer (Aisin-Warner). A few AW4s have been known to work on ATF+4 brand new, however there is plenty of evidence that ATF+4 causes slipping in transmissions that have been on the road for a while.
Dexron 4 may have some other differences... at the very least it doesn't match the same basic properties.
Quality of D/M fluid these days is pretty much what you'd expect from any other fluid. Cheap stuff will be cheap, expensive stuff will be high quality. There is a difference between the Royal Purple stuff and whatever WalMart got lowest bid for. If your AW4 is used for towing or the final drive is undergeared I wouldn't hesitate to seek out a synthetic to deal with higher temperatures.

Can you give a link to this Dex IV? I thought it went straight from Dex III to Dex VI. Anyway, Dex VI is a low viscosity fluid, and I wouldn't try to use it in non-GM apps.
