Changing Oil Pan Gasket ?
about 6 months ago my Jeep started to drip a tiny amount oil from the Gasket around the Oil pan, and now its gotton to the point where it drips a pretty heavy amount of oil.. im just wondering how hard it is to Change the Gasket. Ive called around to different Mechanics where i live and none of them charge more then 200-250 Bucks (which tells me its not a hard change).
Its 1990 Jeep Cherokee, 4.0 Liter, 2Wheel Drive, Manual Trans, Straight 6.
It looks like the Oil pan can come out without having to Remove anything, but im not Certain.
Anyone have any Advice ? or Experience with this, and can give some pointers ?
would be much appricated.

true its no too hard with the exhaust pip in the way but the starter i could see it being in the way. definitely if the vehicle is lifted its easier, IMHO

Thanks everyone for your responses. I appreciate you all taking time to respond.
Once I get the oil pan off, is there any type of Cleaning or Tune ups I can/should do to the bottom side of the Motor (I have no idea what its gonna look like under the pan).
I called the local Auto Parts store here, and they have a Plastic/rubber type Oil Gasket I can buy from them. Is there any advantage or Disadvantage to this type of Gasket over a cork material gasket?
And is there a special type of Gasket Adhesive I should use over another one?
Thanks again all.

I've read here multiple times.....that if you are going to all that trouble, and there is even a hint that your rear main seal is leaking....replace that.
Also....a brand new oil pump never hurt a motor....
I've done neither...just calling on my memory from what I've read here.
Hope this helps..............

of all the oil pan discussions I've heard, Ive never seen anyone mention that the oil pum has to be removed to get the pan out.. When I did mine I couldn't figure out how to get the pan out without removing the oil pump once you had the pan low enough to acces the pump bolts.. then the pump falls to the bottom of the pan and you get a look at it once you get the pan out.. then I had to throw the pump back int the pan to re install it.. get the pan back into position, then reach in and grab the pump and trinstall the pump. that was my experience. if it can be done without removing the pump, then I sure came up short.
didn't have to remove the exhaust when I did mine, but starter had to go.
I also had to use a jack under the front axle to raise it a bit to get the pan to clear the front bottom of the trans (mine was 4x4 your's may not need to do this) as the axle goes down it moves back just enough that there isn't enough room between the axle and the front of the trans for the sump to fit. jacking the axle up helps, but then it has to go back down to get the pan the rest of the way out.
FYI this was on a 5 speed 4x4 4.0 '89
definitely a good time to do the rear main seal

When I did mine I put it up on jack stands, took off my tires to get the axle to droop, pulled my starter, droped the pan,did the seals, gasket, put it all back together. (being lifted helps to)
