center console
I am looking to up grade my 1996 center console/shifter area to one from a 97+. Mine is a four wheel drive and I am wondering if the assembly from a 1998 2wd will work or will my transfer case shifter be in the way?

if not, where could I find the right part? I just need one for a standard transmission, 4x4, and must have cup holders. Thanks, Ted

Ted, I managed to find one at a junkyard that matched the interior color of my XJ and put it in with a couple of modifications. The most difficult is the offset brake handle. You'll need to cut the floor and move it closer to the driver's side. The difference is about 1½ inches. It's a simple matter of cutting, drilling new bolt holes, and filling the void with Bondo or whatever you choose. Another issue is the ventilation underneath the center of the dash; it'll interfere with the different console. I just removed mine and put a CB radio in to compensate and redirected my floor vents to blow away from the CB.
