Absolute JUNK. And now Carter is using Airtex and putting their name on them. Go Bosch only.

In 87 they had no resistor. Customers complained of fuel pump noise. A resistor was added to quiet the pump down.
My apologies, I read somewhere that the resistor was added to reduce load on the pump and extend it's life; seemed plausible.

I know that most motors operate more happily with a proper voltage; do you thing there's an advantage to by-passing the resistor for us who won't whine about a whine, or just leave it be?

Either way is fine. It's JUST a noise issue.

A bad ground will cause an increase in resistance, this can lead to premature pump failure.

Get busy inspecting and cleaning up the pump ground location.

X2 on this. My carter only lasted a few months. Swapped in a Bosch and it has been running fine over a year.

87 had no resistor in early production. Kit to retrofit available.

88 through 90 had resistor as did all through 96 if I'm not mistaken.

I've bought lots of airtex for different vehicles, don't know of any of them failing. I generally give the customer the option and they generally want the cheapest.

I went through 3 Airtex pumps on my rig in less than 14 months.
