Default burning rich/hard to start when warm

my 96 XJ 4.0 is running rich and hard to start when warm... check engine light.

I recently totaled my exhaust manifold... 298,000 k's on the clock... I ended up installing a Edelbrock Shorty Jeep header and a Magna Flow exhaust - cat removed, running a 2.5" pipe from the header back...

am an OBDII compliant vehicle... no code reader yet was thinking maybe it's my fuel injectors? Any thoughts?

Hey you don't need a code reader.

tun the key on and off three times, the check engine light will flash back the error codes.

Why no cat? it's only a federal law. There are lots of good cats out ther that have very high flow rates. Get one. Be legal. Be clean.

How old is your O2 sensor? They always fail rich.

Get you code, the forum can help.

JayM has the right idea. Code can be read at any parts place. AZ or Advance or NAPA to name a few. They do it for free to get you to buy the parts needed from them.
Cat is required by law if the vehicle is driven on the street.
Put a cat on check the codes and correct what the code indicates need to be corrected and if you're are still rich then post back up and we may be able to help you.

Cats are a federal requirement, not a state requirement, just because you do not have emissions testing does not mean that CATs are not required.

Where is AB? Are you in Canada?

Yes in Canada... Alberta... Cats required at time of purchase... ie. new vehicle but no inspections required and they have/are a high theft target - platnium content. It was removed as the previous owner cored it out...

hope that helps...

Usually if they are required new, there is a law out there that makes you keep them.

The new cats do not restrict flow, no reason to not have one.

I would go after the O2 sensor first, they really only last about 80.000 miles

i dont have a cat. In South Carolina if you dont want them you dont have to have them. We dont have Emissions or inspections. but i would check your O2 sensors
