right out of the gate
Hello i am new to this forum stuff i am getting ready to purchase a 1996 cherokee. I am about to be 15 I need to know what would be the best way to start i wanna run with my dad and grandpa and show em what i can do so i need to do it right the first time so i can wheel with the. i am open to all the help i can get from start to finsh i will post my build when i start.

ignore the silly comments..but in all reality..if you're serious about this and not just asking..
you need to determine how you want this rig to be used.
you can mud it, crawl it, or just build a nice daily driver that is great on trails.
as mentioned, a rear locker is good, mine is welded and works GREAT.
mud can ruin your car if you're not prepared to spend money to fix it...wiring, alternators, etc. I wouldnt recommend mudding/water for a daily driver.
determine how high you want the lift..that will also determine how much tire you can fit without cutting. I prefer lower lifts (4-6" max) and fender trimming...lower means less tipping.
Start with that, a lift and good tires is enough money and time to learn how you want to go with it. good luck!

thank you everyone i will probly put cromaly shafts front and rear and regear in the upcoming time my only problem is i dont have enough money to start yet but am gonna put procomp allterrain 33 along with i think i am gonna buy the parts to build my king supeson like my dad if you know redarcher89 on the tj forum. that is about what i am gonna do for now but it is gonna be my project for the next 2 years i will drive offroad till the time comes for me to get my liscend then it will become my daily chick magnet THANK YOU GUYS

Honestly, The very first thing I would do is all of the routine maintainance.
Check and replace all fluids, full proper tune up, Check and replace any worn balljoints, ujoints, tie rod ends. Go through and regrease any and all zerk fittings. check and replace any worn hoses and vac lines. Check and replace serpentine belt if needed.
The better you can make your XJ run stock the better it will run once you modify it.
Do any and all routine maintainence now while you have a proper work area, and it can and WILL save you a ton of headaches out on the trail.
Just my .02 cents.

I wouldn't waste your money on chromo shafts to start with.. or on a dana 35 at all, put in an 8.8 rear and then chromos in the front and you shouldn't ever have problems bashing on 33s

you honestly dont need to change anything at all with the axles, lockers yes, but thats it. my 96 has a Chrysler 8.25 and i am running 31x10.50's and have very little to no power loss at all. you can run just about any size tire on stock axles!

nevermind about wat i said on my last post i misunderstood what my dad said i plan on fixing up along with repainting it before anything else i will make sure there is no rust on the body but other than that i like what you guys are saying please keep the segestion coming when i get a lift what would be the best.
