When and how, Steve? This could be as easy as valve stem seals.

smoking out the tailpipe?
when? idle, cruise, accelerating, decelerating, all the time?
always, sometimes?
cold, hot etc
The valve cover?
just from underneath

how many miles driven since lowering the oil level?

all have a bearing on what to look for or test.

If you power brake it with the rad full, and the cap off, and it bubbles, not good. (combustion gasses are passing into the water jacket). Steam won't "hang", on a warm day, but might in the cold AM. Oil smoke will hang allot more, cold or hot out.

Just thiken...if you fix the oil leaks, (which you probably want to do anyway), then you can focus on where the smoke (from the pipe), is coming from. Once I had a valve cover gasket leak to where some got into the intake manifold. I know likely it's not that, probably stem seals or rings, but no reason not to fix the leaks, then be sure something else is not tricking you.

Once it'd been run good and long, looking at the color of the plug porcelain, along with the other posters info above might be an idea. Black white, even?

How many miles also

Is the front CCV tube routed to the air cleaner, and is the air cleaner OK? (or oily) Is that tube free and un-restricted?

He won't answer those questions for some reason. I've asked more than once.

I'm getting real close to unsubscribing from this thread.

You asked for help - but we cannot help you if you don't give us the information we need to help!

15 miles short trips is not enough - you have to get it HOT to burn the oil out of the exhaust system!

Take it for a long drive on the hiway - get 100-200 miles on it. Then come back on this thread to tell how it fares.

But we can't help if you don't help us help you - you have to do as we say - or like it like it as it is! --- else YOU are the one blowing smoke!

Don't want help? Don't ask!

If it didn't do that before you replaced the oil pan gasket, then something was done wrong when you did it.

This is the part that scares me. Do you know the guys wife, what did she put in where? Do you know how huge the crankcase is on that 4.0, you could probably put 20 quarts of oil in there.

Now if it was run completely dry of say coolant & oil, then put up for sale, well then.........

If as you say it's getting into a cylinder - pull the plugs - it'll be very obvious.

I Still think your exhaust system has oil in it - it has to get hot for a long period of time to burn it off. Running it in your driveway and doing short trips does't get it hot enough. It'll take YEARS like that.

As little as a teaspoon will make huge clouds for a looooong time.

You never did answer if you have lots of blowby.

Try taking loose the tailpipe from the exhaust manifold - push it to the side so the exhaust stream doesn't go down the exhaust pipe. Run the engine to find out if the smoke is truly coming from the engine, not the exhaust system.

But - you can always do as others say - spend bookoo $ on a rebuild you may not need, the economy needs your money more than you do.
