well, i cant really tell you how exactly to get to it, as our interior pieces are different, but from what i understand you just remove front piece like you were getting to your radio and just unscrew it, sorry im not much help with that, im kinda going off what my cousin has told me. If nothing else, follow my rule of thumb, if you cant figure it out....google it lol you should be able to find some sort of guide to getting to it

Okay, just checked the wiring harness for the fan control on the back, and all connections looks good. I can't seem to pull out the unit completely because I can't figure out how to unhook the control for the blower positions. It looks like there's a metal hook attached to it?? Therefore I wasn't able to do a full inspection from the back.

Now my blower/fan seems to want to work more often than not. Hmm. I was thinking it might be a loose connection somewhere, but without touching anything or even driving the truck, it would still work only when it wants to.

I hate to keep bringing up this older topic, but not being able to pinpoint this small problem is driving me crazy considering I have no problem tackling major projects.

check the harness on the far right, it was the combination of the switch and the one one the far right that caused mine to do this. try turning the key over with all the wires connected and wiggle each one until it comes on or goes off. Thats how i discovered which ones it was for me....speaking of that...i never fixed the one on the far right...lol probably need to get on that

Thanks for helping Maniac.. I will try that when it stops snowing/raining.

BTW - Not sure if this is the same symptoms as yours, but my blower fan seems to ALWAYS work the first time the XJ is started up. I can drive it for 5 minutes or 2 hours, it will continue to work. Then if it's parked for a few minutes with the engine off, that's when it decides NOT to work. So maybe something to do with heat? Though I don't feel any heat from the wires or the actual control module like others have stated. Weird.

thats how mine was at first, it would only go off every now and then and would then kick right back on, like a hiccup. then it progressively got worse, but the whole reason for this happening is heat, so make sure you take disconnect ALL things connected to the AC/heat control panel and check for any melting or something to that effect. And yeah mine was kinda random when it came to cutting off, by that i mean i couldnt put any logic behind the random times it would shut off. Anyways, make sure you clean off the copper terminals that the harnesses connect to if they are melted, cause more than likely they will have melted plastic residue on them like mine, and may not conduct properly.

Resolved this issue(s) today and would like to thank all that commented on this thread. Here is the schematic on the fan system:



The fuse was still intact but badly corroded including inside the plastic body. The contact tabs had been cleaned in this photo but were corroded also.



The next issue was the switch associated with the Heat Mode Selector Switch. The connector tabs were corroded and the plastic body was distorted indicating high resistance and current at this point. This device was the core of the problems as the internal slide was burned to the point of not conducting. The electrical switch part of this assembly is only available as a complete assembly for about $200. I would hesitate buying an used one for all the current issues of this obviously under engineered system.

The switch can be opened and cleaned, which I did with a Dremel wire brush. Cleaned the grease with brake cleaner and used silicone grease to put it back together.



The next contacts on the schematic is the Blower Switch. The connector here also was severely distorted this time too much to save. I cut the connector off and soldered individual spade connectors to the wires and cleaned the switch contacts WELL before reassembly. I also disassembled the switch and cleaned the contacts internally.



The resistor unit did not appear to be heat distorted at all and the resistances were of such small values that were beyond the effective range of my HF VOM.

With that everything worked but I am not sure for how long. Jeep should be ashamed of the design of this system. What I did today would have involved about $400 in parts and that or more in labor.
