Default Cherokee still running rough at times

I have replaced the plugs, wires, cap and clip, cleaned throttle body, replaced air filter.

Also changed oil replaced rear main seal, oil pan gasket, valve cover gasket, oil filter cause it was leaking a lot of oil in all locations. (even though this wouldn't help)

What else should I check because sometimes it hesitates on throttle response and runs rough. Engine light comes but sometimes goes away. Maybe cat? Looking for any ideas of what else to look at and clean or replace to try and make this a more reliable vehicle.

Clean your grounds if you haven't already.

  • Battery to body
  • battery to coil
  • 2nd set on the coil (cant remember what they are for)
  • grounds at dipstick mount
  • grounds by PCM
Doing these made a world of difference in how mine ran - and fixed a stalling problem I had.

Firstly, give us the specs of your jeep please, year, trim engine etc, and any changes you know of with the jeep including exhaust.

Have you tried to ever have the code read. Even though the light goes away, some codes are still in the computer.

yep, check for codes first. Then, look for leaks. Then, clean the engine and check for more leaks. Grounds are also a great suggestion to check for, as low voltage will cause all sorts of issues.

I just took a peak at the terminals and one of the red cables is exposed and shows signs of wear. It is exposed to elements and has the white acid all over the connection. Should I just clean and tape or try to replace it?

1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ 4.0l Auto 4x4 4 door factory spec. I bought it for $1000 so just trying to turn it into something a little more than a beater. Eventually if I fix everything I plan to do a lift in a year. This jeep has 350k miles and has had an engine replacement around 75k miles ago. At least the previous owner says. I can tell the engine is a replacement it has a jasper sticker on it.

Take a pic of the terminals. You need to sandpaper clean them and put Di electric grease on them. You May have to go as far as cut back so of the wire and expose new copper and reattach to the terminals

You mentioned hesitation on acceleration ... Have you tested the TPS and MAP sensors? They directly affect throttle response... TPS is self explanatory, the MAP act similar to an accelerator pump on a carburetor among other things.

I will snap a pic tomorrow. How can I test the TPS? Should I just replace it since its rather cheap?

I would take that as a chance to replace the cable. If you can see white residue, that means there is more inside the sheathing that you won't be able to clean.
