Biggest Tire on stock w/o a lift?
What's the biggest off road/AT tire I can fit on a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Limited 4x4 with a 16" wheel with no lift, all stock? Just curious. I'm a big fan of BFG AT TA's, but I'm open to another good brand pending no rubbing. Please chime in and let me know. Currently have 225/70/16's. Thx

Cherokees seem to have the biggest problem with width and scrubbing against the lower control arms (LCA) on sharp turns. I can't stand the sound, so I replaced my nonadjustable steering knuckle stops with slightly longer hardened bolts and lock nuts for a couple of bucks. You can also use washers as shims on the original stop bolts. Someone will mention that adjusting the stops out will increase the turning radius a little, but I would rather have that than hear the rubbing of my BFG A/T KOs.
Back to your question. Your current tires are approximately 8 and 7/8 inches wide and 28 and 1/2 inches tall. You should be able to move up to 235/75 or 30x9.5. However, the BFGs are light truck tires and have a more squared off tread edge than passenger car tires, so you may get a little LCA rub that you wouldn't experience with a Dunlop Radial Rover.
My opinion is to get the BFGs and adjust the steering knuckle stops. I think you'll like it.

if you wanna cut your truck which you didn't mention being against, you can fit 35's with no problems. Just start cutting your truck apart and you will be fine. But I could honestly see the 30's fitting with no cutting.

He's got a pretty good handle on what fits all models.

If you do not wanna drop down the cash for BFG AT KO's think about General Grabber AT2's. Nearly the exact same. I ran them with no issues what so ever. I had the 265/70/r15(30.6x10.4) on stock rims and they rubbed at full crank. they worked fine with a 1.5" budget boost. other the the rub at full crank

I run 235/70/16 on stock ride height, and the tires rub very little when the wheel is turned all the way, so i would think any A/T larger than that would give u problems.

How do you like your Grabbers? I specifically would like to know your impression of ride quality and noise level on the street. How many miles do you have on them?
Thanks for the feedback.

Hey, this is my first real post on cf haha.
Anways, I fit 31" a/t's on my stock cherokee with minor trimming to the corners on the bottom of the front bumper and 1/4" washers on each steering stop. Not much clearance, but no rubbing at all with street driving and pot-holed gravel road stuff. I couldn't pass up the deal I got offered on my tires and I know a lift is in my near future so it's fine for now.

Xj limiteds came with the 16 inch wheel. For some reason there has been an increase in posts about tires fitting stock height or budget boost lately. Anyway some 30's are actually the same size as a 235. Some are actually 30 inches but often are 29.8 or something. Shop tires on Amazon and they will tell you the weight and actual diameter. And bfg's are available in a 225 and so are a few other good tires. I've been looking at the falken wild peak at3w or kumho road venture at51. Either in 30 or 33 depending on which jeep I put them on.
