I just painted my aluminum wheels last week and it was a breeze.
Get some masking tape and tape off the tire or if you want it to look a little bit better, tape off the lip of the wheel to give it that cool two piece wheel look, tape off the valve stem and the lugs too.
Make sure all the loose clear has been removed and all dirt and debris cleaned off.
Purchase some good rust oleum in either flat or satin and put on 3-4 light coats waiting 15-20 between coats.
Let it dry for at least 6 hours and either drive it, or put on some clear.
My wheels turned out great for being spray painted, and will work well until i can get my new wheel tire package.

Well i jus did mine two weeks ago.
The way i did it is i put a deck of cards around the tire not to paint the tire (also index cards work good too).
I washed it squeaky clean.
then i sanded it down with light grit paper. works better when its wet.
then i jus skipped the primer color and went with dupli color high temp black paint.
i put about three coats on each rim.
After that i went and put dupli color clear coat. bout two coats.
It came out looking great, if i spent more time they would look awesome but i did a fast job since it was gonna rain and plus ima get new rims too soon.
But for the moment they look really good.
not a bad for wasting an hour or two on a work day off

If it's short term and you're definitely getting new wheels soon, then go for it. If you think it will last a year, you're wrong. Honestly, I would not bother and just get a new set of wheels. Check out Summit Racing for wheels and tires.I got Cragar V5s for like $46 ea, I think soft 8s are like 53 or so. Free shipping. Tires have a $9 hanling fee and free shipping.

Clean and polish them so they look as pretty as new ones then have them powdercoated with clear. About $15 a wheel but will last for a few years on the street and maybe a couple years on the trail.
