Does anyone know anything about this style brake system Jeep used on the 89 Laredo w/ABS. I know there was a recall on the brake/pump/actuator motor. The piston seal would break and cause vacuum loss to the accumulator. Does anyone know of a way to convert to standard vacuum assist power brakes and is there a way to disable the ABS totally. I know the brake system works like normal just without ABS which is fine with me. I just get tired of seeing the check antilock light on.

remove the relays and fusses

or you can un plug the sensor wires from the box under the back seat
the abs will not function with no signal then you need to un plug the check abs light if it bothers you

your check ABS light my be on cus of mud built up in the sensor rings on each wheel could be just one ring that is giving you the check abs

The Bendix 9 is a pressure-cell type of ABS. Several European manufacturers use a similar system. It uses a hydraulic pump for system-pressure and has no vacuum booster. When the system fails, you will have very little in the way of brakes.

There is a lifetime recall on these really finicky systems, but the best solution is to remove the system and install a traditional vacuum-booster arrangement. Find a parts-Jeep in the JY and salvage all you can... all you really need to buy new will be brake hoses and pads/shoes if you need them.

No... it has a rebuild-kit for the master cylinder and a new hydraulic pump. Some kits also include a new accumulator.

It doesn't fix or change anything. Momma MOPAR just keeps patching them up until they are all scrapped.

Yes. Actuator/pump motor that creates vacuum in the accumulator that is the power assist. Does anyone know of a write up or website that talks about this swap to regular power brakes.

It does not create vacuum... it creates pressure. That is a pressure accumulator.

The only reason I'm correcting you is to keep you from getting 700psi brake fluid in your face when you try to take it apart.

To relieve system pressure, pump the pedal 20 times with the key "off".

I have never looked for one.

Rip the old system out and replace everything with JY parts. You will need the vac booster, master cylinder, prop valve, and all of the front metal brake lines.

The recall will cover the system ONLY if untouched, and under 100,000 miles. The only parts that have a lifetime recall on them are the BRAKE ACTUATOR PISTON ASSEMBLY AND THE PUMP-MOTOR

The stealership told me that I had to replace the accumulator, relay, and the pump motor, and that they "could" cover the pump motor. The other would cost me $830.00 (BTW - that does not include labor).

They could cover it? How about it is a federal recall! They would [I]have[I] to cover it! Oh well, off to the parts yard!

I was also told at the dealership that they could not replace just the pump motor. Does anyone know if they have to replace all 3 components? or can they just do what is covered under the recall?
