Talking Belt squeal

2001 xj, belt replaced after a/c clutch pulley bearing seized. New compressor in. Turned other driven components by hand to check for excessive resistance. All seems ok.

Been putting a turn or two on it when it chirps or more, typically when a/c switched on. On going process as needed. Have used belt dressing.

Tensioner bolt threads almost at end of tight side travel.

Is this one of those xj typical things, and the fixes or belt recommendations? I can add washers to the bolt, but that doesn't address why I am running out of travel.

New here - hi everyone!!

Oh - just lost a wheel center cap, great....

You may be the victim of a too large belt. If you have the broken one did you compare it to the new one?

I spread them out in my hands, same. The old one didn't break so I got a good look.

Exclamation

Yes, I bought the cheapest one. In this case it was at autozone. I didn't try to go dirt cheap like it came from the DollarStore, I thought it would be serviceable for standard duty from a major chain store. I thought I was buying the basic or "good" in a good-better-best scenario. I think it is a Dayco, not 100% sure.

I know some stuff is cheap crap and you get what you pay for on the low end. This may or may not be the whole answer.

The other aspect of my post was the question of whether the belt / pulley configuration on the 2001 xj 4.0L / AW4/ A/C tends toward higher stresses: does just tightening the belt more eventually create destructive lateral pressures on the bearing surfaces?

Oh, and BTW, I found the lost wheel center cap! 3 of 4 were really loose, pulled them and put a little RTV around the perimeter.

Default Check the routing .

I changed my belt on my jeep once and had somehow misrouted it. I had the exact same issue, growled at the flaps manger when he suggested it was threaded wrong. Turns out he was right .(oops) Not saying thatis whats happening here but never hurts to check.

good tip, thanks for the reply. I diagramed it then noticed my sketch matched the decal near the radiator and I'm sure it is correct, but I will check it again.

my belt squeeks when i turn the A/c on at times. it will squeek for about a minute then stop. only on a cold start up. I kinda chalked it up as a "deal with it" thing cause it doesnt happen all the time, doesnt happen when the a/c is OFF and only on some cold start ups. I would say something is a-miss if your tensioner is almost maxed out.

I'm having the same problem with a dayco belt I just purchased from Advance Auto. I thought I was getting a decent one; they had two to choose from and this was the 'better' one. Same size, maybe even slightly smaller (not stretched) than the old one. On cold starts, when I turn the A/C on, I get belt squeal for 2-3 minutes. I just might be putting the old belt back on, it never gave me problems.
