LOL, my detective skills come from a tight budget and luckily my Jeep is not a daily driver.

I would like to hear if your problem is solved after replacing the NSS. I will pull mine apart this weekend.

It's not the starter, not the NSS, not a bad battery (tested with a jump).
What can it be?

I get no crank, no click, no difference in P or N or any other gear. Voltage is good, it looks solid over 12 volts in the car.

Ignition switch? What else?
I believe you have a problem in the starting circuit. You need to do some electrical testing. In post 22 I posted an initial test.

Get a helper. Disconnect the starter solenoid wire at the terminal. This way the engine will not crank over. Have the helper hold the key to start while you check for voltage at that wire. Set your meter to 20 volts DC. Touch the read lead to the wire and the black lead to a good ground.

With the key held to start you should read battery voltage. I would bet you get no voltage reading. Or maybe a low voltage reading. In this case the starter would not engage.

Do this test a couple of times in case you may have an intermittent issue.

By the way, tried this on Sunday when it didn't start, headlights don't even flicker. Just stable light.

Ok I will do this.
But the starter solenoid, do you mean the one at the starter or the starter relay (which is called the starter solenoid sometimes)?

The starter solenoid is at the starter. The relay is in the Power Distribution Center. At the starter you will see the red battery positive cable and the thin solenoid wire. The thin wire is the one.

Got it, thanks!

Funny, now the Jeep has started flawlessly about 7-8 times in the last 48 hours.
Wonder what causes it not to start?

Not sure it classifies as cleaning but it helped last night!

That's the write-up I used!
Sorry, but what do you mean by "four to the left under the hood" ?
Do you mean the 4 leftmost relays in the fuse box under the hood?
Which 4? It's not obvious. Please be as specific as you possibly can. Thanks!

Hmm hard to say, it seems like you have a newer XJ than me. Mine is a -90, and I do not have that box under the hood.
I have 4 relays behind the battery, on the left fender. Then a few more on the right fender, almost right behind the headlights.

Just unplug them, and go at it with some electric cleaner spray. I even rubbed them a bit with some paper.

Well since it starts, I am pretty sure you can eliminate the pos cable, the starter and the solenoid.

The fault appears to be intermittent and in the starting circuit. When it fails to start again do the test I suggested before anything else. That test will provide good info. Before starting take a voltage reading of your battery. That is the voltage you will look for during the test.

there are times my project jeep will start up fine every day.
but i know my nss is bad. no reverse lights helps me determine that.

i can jump the starter and it will start every time, then may start fine for days.

other times i can wiggle my shifter with the ignition all the way forward and it will start, but other times it won't.

that's what happens with a dirty nss.

Nah not quite. That arrow points to a fuse. The relays are the square black things on the left.
