ball joint replacement
I think I know the answer to this one but thought I'd ask anyway. I'm getting ready to replace the upper & lower ball joints on my 90 xj 4x4 both sides have about 1/16th or more of play, so does it make sense to replace the axle u joints also? I've never done this before is it a tough job?

It's not tough if you have the right tools. If you don't, then it is a nightmare. You need a ball joint press, with the 4wd adapter kit. Sometimes getting the knuckle to drop off is a pain, but if you use the BFH and hit it on the flat spot on top, it should eventually pop off.
I would go ahead and replace my axle ujoints, if I didn't know the last time they had been done.

thanks for the info. I borrowed the tools (separator & press) from O'reillys but I don't know if the press has the 4wd kit or not. The press kit came in a carry box with several adapters and such. Just don't know if any of the adapters are the 4wd kit or not.

I broke my Craftsman 2' breaker bar when I did mine. Key when pressing them out is to use forceful quick turns. Don't go slow and steady when it starts getting hard.
