Both of my backup lights haven't worked since i got this jeep a few months ago. The bulbs are good and properly plugged in. I've read about the NSS causing this issue but i also read that the jeep will not crank if it's the NSS. My jeep cranks, runs, and shifts fine...just need the lights to work. I'm thinking it's the fuse, just need someone to help me out on where it's located.

Your reverse lights are the first thing to go when your NSS starts to go bad. Do some searching and you will find how to clean and service it.

just install some walmart fog lights and use those. thats what i did and they are super bright

Just finished cleaning the NSS....NOT IT. Any other suggestions? like is there a fuse anywhere for them like i asked in my first post? Thanks.

Look in the fuse box..in my 88 its in the driverside footwell..
My jeep is a 5speed and has a back up sensor in the trans itself..right now I don't have it hooked up so I have no back up lights, but I think your sensor is in the NSS itself.

Yeah cleaning the NSS like i just did should have done the trick if that was the issue (atleast i'd think). I really need to purchase a haynes manual. I checked the fuses that were in my engine capartment box and cab and they all looked fine. Bulbs are good, NSS clean, fuses look fine, the jeep starts and shifts fine....only thing i can think of would be a faulty connection in the wiring somewhere.

Try swapping the fuse anyway..I know my turn signal fuse looked great, even when I pulled it..wasn't blown & looked new. Hazzards worked but no turn signals. Fuse looked great, replaced both the blinker relays and still nothing.
This caused me to thing that I had a cut wire, or short somewhere..since I had hazzards and stuff.
So I took my whole head panel and everything off, I traced wires for 2 days before I gave up..I found nothing wrong at all!
A few weeks later I was at autozone and grabbed a box of fuses for the hell of it and replaced em all in the parking lot..sure enough I left and I had turn signals again.

I did the same thing. I put some of the walmart small fog lights so the wont hang down to far. But they do work great. Nice and bright.

If the NSS isn't clocked right they wont light up either.

Really dumb question, I know you said the bulbs are good, how do the sockets look?

If that doesn't work test all the fuses then clock the NSS.

Those sockets were the 2nd thing i checked lol. It's a great question actually because i had one of the sockets cracked on my turn signals that i recently replaced. But the sockets are good. What do you mean by clock the NSS? Thanks for the responses.

The NSS doesn't have a fixed position, it can rotate fore and aft. Loosen the bolt holding it in place and snug it so it can be moved but not flop around freely.

Easiest if you have two people helping, one to sit on the brakes and put it in reverse, the other to see if the lights come on as you clock the NSS. Slowly rotate the NSS and see if it will engage the lights.

The only problem is they still wont come on for him when he puts it in reverse. He'd have to throw a switch manually each time and depending on his state requirement that may not pass inspection.

Haynes is no roadmap, either. It doesn't show you WHERE it's at, only that it's a 15A fuse labelled "TURN/BU" in the fuse panel. It is different and separate from the "PARK/TAIL" and "CLK HAZ STOP" fuses (both 20A fuses). Sorry I couldn't be much more help.

Ah ok yeah I clocked my nss because it wouldn't start in neutral after I put it back up there but didn't even try to further adjust it. Ill definitely try that tomorrow if I ever get the time to. And yeah I thought about doing a manual switch for the lights if I can't find the problem; ill have to look into inspection policies about that. Thanks again for the help guys.

I'd mark the location farthest fore and aft that it'll start in park and neutral and kick the lights on. Then drop it somewhere in the middle.
