A neutral safety switch is a simple on/off switch that only works in park and neutral for the starter circuit and costs $5.
The Jeep AW4 uses a gear position sensor instead of a neutral switch. The controller for the AW4 wants to know actual shifter position since it has an electric overdrive solenoid and economy/power shift programs.

I have found an article about disassembling the gear position sensor and cleaning the wiper and contacts. We'll see how that works this weekend. I'll take pics as well.

What year is your XJ? I may be wrong but our XJ's even with the AW4 trany uses an NSS and the TCM regulates what gear it's in and so on. I look through the trany FSM and found nothing so far up to 96 for a Gear Position Sensor.

X 2...I too own a 1991 XJ Sport and the item you pictured on top and call a Gear Position Sensor is a Nuetral Safety Switch in my 1991 Aisin AW4 Automatic tranny.

Do a search on the NSS. There are a few threads on this forum on how to clean and reassemble your existing NSS for around $15. The only reason they quit working is they get gunked up with dirt and moisture that get inside and corrode the electrical connections.

It works on the original switch ONLY. If it is an aftermarket replacement, it will be epoxied instead of screwed.
I have the original switch.
Mentioned that in my first post...

Ok let's clarify...The second photo is call
Neutral Starter and Back-Up Light Safety Switch for a 91-93 YJ, There is also this same part different number for the ZJ 42RE.
Factory Part# 4057 750
The first photo is a "SWITCH, Neutral Starter and Back-Up Light Safety" factory part# 8350 3712 for a 91-93 XJ. The first one is what we call the NSS. There is also Part #8350 3722 which is listed as a speed sensor which looks very similar.
These are actual factory part #'s from the 91-93 Factory Parts manual.

Here, I scanned the diagram for you.
The park/neutral wiring is not shown because (according to MOPAR) that's NOT part of the transmission control circuits... it's part of the starting circuits.

I understand what you are saying but that second part is not on an AW4 at all. Look at all the parts for an AW4 in the Factory Parts Manual and you will that second part only exists for the YJ and ZJ transmissions and not the AW4. That diagram is nothing more then a standard wiring diagram and does little to tell you what part you need. I'd be interested to see this article you found showing that second part, so if you have a link post it if you don't mind. Maybe we will all learn something here.. I will gladly email you a PDF of the 01-03 Jeep Factory Parts Manual which covoers 91-93 YJ's, 91-03 XJ's and 93 ZJ's.

I have the factory manuals via Dealerconnect. I'm a MOPAR tech.
I needed an aftermarket solution, but after further research I found that the original sensors can be disassembled and cleaned/repaired.
here is a link to the article:
http://www.jpmagazine.com/techarticl...tch/index.html
It only works on original screwed-together sensors... the aftermarket epoxied ones can't be disassembled without cutting.
Sorry for the misunderstanding. I wasn't trying to be argumentative. I just wasn't clear of my intentions about picturing a neutral switch.
