The AW4 (the only auto used with the 4.0L I6 in the XJ Cherokee) is pretty much bullet-proof. It is made by Aisin and is virtually identical to the A340 used in late 80s to early 00s Toyota 4-runner, Tacoma, T100, Tundra, Supra, Lexus SC/LS, etc.

An important note: The AW4 takes Dexron III / Mercon fluid, DO NOT USE ATF+4 which is used in Chrysler transmissions, it is known to cause issues.

Are they pretty good for towing I have a 88 with the b10 so I'm looking to tow a small camper.. VERY small any upgrades you all suggest?

The AW4's greatest enemy is heat. Keep the fluid changes up to date and don't overheat it and the drivetrain will greatly outlast the rest of the Jeep. An auxilliary cooler is money well spent on these things. What's the weight of the camper? If it's a popup weighing 500 lbs I wouldn't even bother. Just kick it out of overdrive if you're in hilly terrain.
